I Replaced The Ashtray With An Oem Storage Bin - Photos Inside

I recently ordered the storage tray that replaces the ashtray - part number 51167136190. In the diagram below it is labelled 4 and 5. This is an option in Europe for non-smokers, sadly it's not an option here. It arrived within a few days and cost $61. Bargain! So I picked up the part from Bib Stillwell BMW and opted to install it myself. "Can't be too hard", I thought, and the parts guys agreed.

I had a quick look at realised that it was going to be harder than I thought, and called the parts guy I'd been dealing with to see if he could give me some pointers. He offered to print off the instructions and I could go and pick them up.

To cut a long story short, there were no instructions available, but one of the service guys said it would take 2 hours to install, at a cost of $400!! In order to install it, you need to remove the entire centre console all the way from the armrest to the ashtray.

I decided there was no way I was going to pay $400 to install a $60 part, so said "I'll give it a shot".

I'm happy to report that I managed to install it in under 2 hours... I did it in 1 hour 50 minutes .

Even though it took this long, I'm stoked to have the extra storage space, and finally I have somewhere to put my sunnies!

Here's a couple of pics:

ye gods! $400! Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself and saving $400 in the bargain!

Well done! I have this option. Saw no point in an ashtray when I don't smoke and it's not like the 1er is overflowing with storage spaces.

Now I have somewhere for my sunnies also and if I have a passenger they have somewhere for their phone.

That's a problem if you don't have built in satnav. The only other powerpoint is in the boot.

You lose the cigarette lighter and 12V power supply. However, there is a 2nd one under the armrest, so I guess you could obtain a 12V extension lead from Tandy or Dick Smith and run the lead through the centre console, and out the other end. Alternatively, hardwire your nav to the port that the cigarette lighter plugs into, which is housed just behind the gear shift.

Yeah, you lose the lid. It'd be nice to be able to retain the lid, but I'm not to fussed.

Only the pre-delivery photos

I'm at work and my laptop doesn't have the Canon software so I can't download my photos. Will do tonight.

Don't you guys put your sunnies in the compartment to the right side of the steering column? That's what it's made for isn't it?

I use that for my garage door remote. Besides, there's limited storage in the 1er anyway, so I reckon this is a great solution, even if it does take 2 hours!

Does it register from there? Why not adhere it to the windscreen? You can get a new eTag now - it's tiny! Call Citylink and tell them the battery in your old one died, and they'll send you the new version for nix.

Definitely agree. My 120i didn't even have the dash top compartment, so I bought that but wasn't brave enough to cut the dash.
Dealer wanted $320 to fit. Car audio place did it for $120. Days later the dash bubbled up badly from the heat generated drying it out. Vinyl repairer fixed it pretty good.

This looks a lot safer to fit myself!
