Marulan Driver Training Centre

I recently heard about the Marulan Driver Training Centre that opened for business in January this year. It's located just outside of Marulan (obviously), which is on the Hume Freeway, between Berrima and Goulburn in NSW. The facility has a purpose built 1km sealed circuit that is available for track day hire. It's short (half the length of Wakefield Park!), but should still be a lot of fun. I am doing a track day up there on 15th March, which has been organised by MX-5 Mania - will be in my MX-5 of course. Will post my thoughts on the track afterwards.

BTW, the track is owned by Garry Willmington who used to manage Wakefield Park before it was sold it to the mob from Winton.

Had a great time at Marulan on Sunday. I've got heaps of video and photos, and will post them up soon. It's a very tight and difficult circuit to drive. Nearly all corners are 2nd gear, and maybe even 1st gear depending on the line you take. I only briefly got into 3rd gear in a few places on the track, and that's with the short-geared MX-5 (2nd gear ends at ~85km/hr). And with all those tight turns, it's a very physical and tiring track to drive. I slept very well on Sunday night!

The facilities there are very good. There is excellent covered spectator viewing of the entire circuit, with plenty of plastic chairs and tables. The canteen was pretty good too. They could use a few more pit garages since there's only really space for maybe half a dozen cars (double that if they double-park). There's lots more space in the carpark, but it slopes a bit so you need to take care with parking after a track session (hand-brake off, remember!). The organisation on the day was a bit casual, with lots of "should do" rules (as opposed to "get this wrong and we'll kick your butt!"). They have some noise restrictions on the site, so those with open exhausts had to install some chicken wire muffling in the pipe exit. They're hoping not to piss off the neighbours too much. Still a lot of the details of operation are to be sorted out at the site.

This gives you an idea of the clockwise circuit layout and the speeds I was clocking in my MX-5. It's only a little naturally-aspirated 1.6L so don't expect too much!

I reckon the 1er would do OK there. My mate was driving his BA XR8 and it coped surprisingly well, so the 1er should be fine. The low down strong pull out of corners would make the 1er a quick car on this circuit.
