Pics: 1-series convertible mule next to E30

Keep in mind that the convertible still has cladding on, making it look bigger than it is... and also that the E30 is lowered.

I've been so close to buying an E30 and doing a full restoration.

E30 is a great car, too bad they're all used up at this point. Whenever a new 3 series is going to be designed, they should have a E30 refresher course for the designers to study. I miss my backwards opening hood.

If I were to pick 1 design element from the 1er to compare to the E30, it would be the windshield.

BMW should market the 1 series with comparisons to the E30. These comparisons with the 2002 make no sense. Few had a 2002, few remember the 2002, but E30s were everywhere for a long time.

You can thank the ridiculous pedestrian safety laws for a lot of the visual differences.

Harold, were those pix taken north and east of San Diego? Possibly a little country store parking lot?

It's my understanding that the 1-series 5-door is closer in length to a 2002 than to an E30 (probably where the comparisons to the 2002 are coming from), so its fair to assume that the convertible and coupe should be similar in size. That being said, because its got a long wheelbase, it should be at least as roomy as an E30 (although I would not consider the back seat of my '91 cabrio to be roomy).

The 135i is roughly 1.4" longer, 4" wider, 1.1" taller, and has a 3.5" longer wheelbase than an E30.

I've looked at many a e30, just never found the "right" one. I'd love an e30 325xi sedan, but those are hard to find around memphis. I looked at a coupe, needed a lot of work, and a non xi sedan that also needed too much work. I can work on a car, I just dont like too if I can keep from having too. I dont get the whole "let me pay you money to work on something you f'ed up" concept...

Plus, parking is allready crowded with 3 cars and 2 drivers, and I'm about to buy a beater truck too, lol...
