Anybody seen the articles on the 1er in the latest Roundel?

Had a review of the 135is vert, and a short article about not calling the 1 Series a girly car.

After reading the article about "girly" car, even though the author agreed that it's not, I really got the feeling he wasn't that impressed with it. But not due to it's performance, rather due to his bias for the other BMW models. To me he really came accross as condescending, like the 1 was the red headed step child of the line up.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised coming from the magazine of the CCA. But most CCA members I have met are true enthusiest and appreciate the 1 for what it is.

Of course could be I'm just too sensitive about my car. Wondered what other people thought

You're not a real enthusiast until you've thrown a punch at someone for calling your 1 ugly.

I asked Satch for permission to do a review on the 135is several times before I left the magazine (and even after). He said no every time.

Over the years the general bent of opinion of the 1er in Roundel has been incredibly positive. Satch's initial review of the 135i was really good if I remember correctly. He did make sarcastic, snarky comments about the 128i, but he wouldn't be himself if he didn't do something like that. haha.

As 1er enthusiasts, we really can't complain, since MINI takes more abuse, as will the soon to come i3 and other i series cars. And you know what? The car _is_ a little bit funky looking. People don't like it? So be it!

Mark Jon Calabrese recently purchased a 135i, if I recall correctly. And while I'm sure there are "girly" configurations of the 1, same can be said for other BMW models as well. However, my wife's 128i 6MT M-Sport doesn't really qualify as "girly" - see photo:

I found it weird they chose the Carolina chapter of the CCA their opinions and the majority of the cars shown appeared factory spec stock. Only 1 person actually did something with suspension etc, most of the rest complained about it instead.

I thought the article wasn't too bad. Agree that the people they talked with seemed on the whole to be more 'just buy it and drive it' types than true enthusiast. I've read a number of good articles about the 1 in Roundel over the years, and both in the magazine and in emails from him Mike Miller has always championed the 1 series as the closest thing currently being built that takes you back to what driving a BMW is all about.

In my opinion you are just being to sensitive and to be honest a bit "girly." I would say you seem to be only interested in others opinions instead of your intrest in your car. You were upset somebody said something that might be considered bad so you went to seek others approval. If you like your car than what do other peoples opinions have to do with it? However, if you don't really like your car but what you think the image that it gives you, than you would logically be bothered by somebody thinking it give a different image than you wanted. I see it as very similar to a girl getting pissed when another girl calls her shoes "interesting" and than seeks approval from their friends because they want the right image. The review does not change the car in any way just how you think people may view you as the car owner. Now, after saying all of this I do want to state that obviously, not all women behave that way just as not everyone that owned a 135i is an driving enthusiast or girly.

Given Mike Miller's repeated articles about the 128i being the last great thing from BMW, I don't think Roundel is lacking with 1er love.

June issue of Roundel on page 92 Mike Miller gave a glowing tribute to the 1M, who said, in part, "The 1M is the Truth -- the essence of what BMW used to be in its Golden Years, and a tribute to that era and the generation that made BMW the Ultimate Driving Machine well before it became a manufacturer of smart phones on wheels -- albeit phones with greater driving dynamics than the competition."

i thought it was a poor article. Not a lot of info in the article except a few samplings from people who seem to not care about driving a car the way we do. So I am not sure why this article would evoke any type of emotional response from you? We all know how great our cars are so who cares what others think? I just get into my car everyday for some spirited driving, when I hear the sound of my PE and start shifting it brings a smile to my face no matter how many articles are written. When that stops happening its time for a new car.
