Stud conversion// Lug nut question

So I'm already thinking about new wheels and will be doing a stud conversion at the same time.

My wheels will be 8" and 9".

Questions;

1. Will 75mm stud be sufficient in terms of length?
(Might run up to 10mm spacers)

2. Will 1.36" (34.5mm) closed end lug nut be sufficient in lengths for the new rims and also when I switch back to OEM wheels in the winter?

Thanks for your help

75mm can handle up to a 12mm spacer safely. Make sure you install the studs correctly and use loctite and never-seez as recommended.

In order to cover the entire stud, a 40mm lug should be used. A 34.5mm lug will leave a little bit of the stud exposed. It all depends on the look you're trying to achieve.

Here is an example of a 40mm lug that I've used before:
http://www.evasivemotorsports.com/mm...tegory_Code=L1

Also, remember that a spacer will change the length of the stud that will stick out, so a 30mm(ish) lug with a 10mm spacer may be sufficient... Just have to do some trial and error and/or take some measurements.

Oh, and I would get open-end lugs, unless you know for sure it's going to clear the end of the stud. Would be a major headache.

Lil off topic but why people doing studs conversion?
Because it looks cool?
Because it is easier to change wheels?
Or what?

Thank you bogart, you are always knowledgeable!!

I think I'll go with open ended ones for safety.

For me, it's mainly cosmetic but also to ease the pain of changing wheels.

But there seems to be other merits like strength of studs.

If you google, there are thousands you can find on it.

I don't get the cosmetic part. 75mm+ studs make the car look like Roman fighting buggies and the 40mm nuts just look weird and "cheap" to me. Ok for a Civic, don't like the look on BMWs...

Nothing looks as good (and by that I mean near-invisible) as stock lug bolts.

I did the stud conversion on mine since I change wheels at least once a month (autocross/track) and it's much easier with studs. Since I don't like the Roman chariot look, I went with 57mm studs (3mm spacer up front).

I did a stud conversion because it is easier to install different wheels in minimum time without the hassles of holding the rim/wheel up and trying to line up the bolt holes...

I actually find it easier with the lug bolts over nuts. Maybe it's just me. I would be curious to know why a stud would be stronger than I bolt of the same grade though....

It is easier to change wheels.

You can throw the wheel up on the studs, throw a nut on and the wheel is instantly centered and ready to do all 4 other nuts. No need to be concerned with cross thread, or lining up the wheel to make sure it is centered.

I went from an hour for changing wheels to 15 minutes. I run with an impact too so it makes it quick for taking the wheels off. I do this every weekend for my autocross and track tires so I prefer quick methods.

OP - 75mm can run up to 12mm spacers. I run 75mm and 5mm spacers on the Z4M and the fronts stick out a bit. I have Vorshlag Studs and nuts

Makes swapping wheels a lot easier, you can run wheels without hubcentric rings if you'd like, and you can run different lug nuts.
