Service Interval Display

I have 6600 miles on my car but the service interval display (SID) still says the remaining distance to the first service is 15,000. It does not seem to be counting down. I brought my car in at 5500 miles just to change the oil and filter and I specifically said not to reset the system. Even at 5500 miles the SID said the remaining distance to the first service is 15,000. Do any of you have any thoughts on this or is this normal and I'm just worrying about nothing?

BTW, I live only 5.5 miles from work in a pretty small town and rarely have occasion to drive longer distances because of location. I split my commute between the E90 and my Harley. I purchased the car in July 2005. Thanks for your help!

here we go again. i can see it coming. another debate about whether or not the SID is miles remaining, or miles at service...

from my personal observation, as well as the observation of many others, the SID does not count down.

it does count down, just really slowly and the number won't change until you've got a few thousand miles down

Page 69 of the manual says

Quote:
The remaining driving distance and the date of the next scheduled service are displayed briefly immediately after you start the engine or switch on the ignition.
Having said that, mine stayed at 25,000km for the first 6,000km or so, and has now started counting down... to 24,000.

I think this must be the CBC analysing how you drive in order to determine when the service is needed.

I can confirm it does count down.

I have 8900km's on my diesel car. When I bought it, it said 15000km's to service. It stayed there until about 5000km's and then dropped to 14000km's.
The reason it stays high so long, is that it is condition based servicing. The car has to "read" what is getting worn down, and then compute the intervals to the next service. It doesn't go down linear, it goes down according to the wear and tear happening in your engine - as it calculates it.

If you got to 15000 and it hadn't changed, then I would pop into BMW to check it out - but at 5000mi I woulnd't worry.

You will see - as time goes on and your car gets more and more milage on it - it will start to drop more. As the Service interval indicator drops, it becomes more and more accurate.

BMW generally (well in SA at any rate) will only service your car (under motorplan) if it is within 500km's of the service interval indicator.

Mine was counting down every 1000 miles.
After 19.2 update, started counting down every 100 miles now?

Had first oil change @ 5500 miles got car back & now says 3900
miles till next oil change. I give up not a clue what's up?

Garage List
My E90 is at 12,770 and I still have 9,000 to go. It will vary depending on how you drive the car. I drive all highway.

My service indicator says 30,000 kms.
This is for a 320d.

That seems rather high doesn't it? Is that right?
I only have 700kms on the car so far so it hasn't started counting down yet.

Thanks to a round trip to Fresno, I now have over 7,000 miles and I have also noticed that the Service Interval Display has finally changed. It jumped down to 14,000miles.

Thanks again for all your comments!

I've got roughly the same kms, and also about 23000km SII, although so far most of my mileage has been long-distance (Xmas trip from Melbourne to Brisbane and back )
