225s all round?

Hiya,

I am looking at fitting wheels that only come in 18 x 8 in the correct offsets for the 1er.

I shall be fitting 225/40/18s up front and the matching rear would normally be a 255/35/18 but this is too wide to fit on an 8" rim.

What do you guys think about fitting 225s all round? I know that some contend that this will in fact give more neutral handling so it shouldn't be a problem from that point of view. However, I am a little concerned that perhaps I will not have enough traction from a standing start.

The other option is to fit 245/38/18s at the rear. These will fit on the 8" rim but the overall rolling diameter is not the same as the 225s and so these are not ideal.

Any thoughts or advice?

Cheers

Jack

My offsets are:

Front: 18 x 8 ET45
Rear: 18 x 8 ET40

They fit great - no problems.

From what I can see on various wheel/tire websites, the maximum width tire recommended on an 8" wheel is 245. I am prepared to be convinced that a wider tire will fit properly and safely.

if you get 225's on the rear your traction control light will be going off often!

well if you put your fronts on the rear and rears on the front 245 PS2s should fit great. close in the front but should be fine. and no you shouldn't go bigger than the 245 on an 8" rim

For what its worth I own a 1991 mustang foxbody that has 15X8 weld rims for the rear and 275s mounted nicely. Then again, it's a 15 inch rim and the sidewall is huge (which makes it easier to fit a fatter tire on a smaller rim).

Low profile tires are less lenient when it comes to stuffing fat meats on big (17" and up) rims.

Edit, I agree on 225s being a bad idea for rear tires. You will have no traction unless those 225s are super sticky.

245 minimum for these cars.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think going with 245 in the front may give me clearance issues.

My feeling now is after all to go with 225s in the front and 245s in the rear. Will I be ok with that setup?

that set up will be fine. If I were you I'd try fitting the rears on the front some time just to judge clarence so maybe in the future you can run 245 all around. I run 245/40/17 PS2s all around on 17x8.5 et38 rims. I have had no rubbing what so ever and I take the car to the track.

Jack,

1. You probably want to use your ET +40 in FRONT and ET +45 in REAR. OEMs are +49 frt / +52 rear.
2. I have 18 x 8.0 ET +42 and 235/40 all around (Kumho Ecsta XS tires).
3. You WILL get slight rub with 245/40 in front using stock suspension... front fender liner on sharp dips. Also with +45 and 245, you'll be VERY close to the strut with likely rub.
4. If you can find 245/35 tires, they'll probably work with ET +40 front. Remember my 235/40 actually rubs (very slightly) front part of fender liner on dips. Was acceptable for both street and track use though.

Hi,

I can see what you're saying but what I was trying to do by choosing those offsets was to bring both wheels out by almost the same amount ie. the front is further outboard by 10mm and the rear by 6mm. I thought this might help the handling (or at least not adversely affect it) and also would look better.

With ET42 all round you've got the front wheel further outboard by 13mm and the rear by 4mm, so you've got a differential of 9mm. Perhaps it makes no difference anyway, but that was my thinking.

Further to all the helpful advice I've now gone with Pirelli P Zero Rossos at 225/40/18 front and 245/35/18 rear. I've got absolutely no rubbing anywhere. Car is lowered about 20mm but fenders etc are stock.
