We have a governor who was out wandering in the woods as of last nights news that also has issues with seat belts. He says he is a libertarian so he doesn't want to pass laws unless you are doing something that hurts somebody else. So we have really high insurance for the size state and city I live in. From my point of view, when people do not wear their seatbelt and are in a wreck, they get injured worse, require more medical treatment, and drive up costs. So when you don't wear you seat belt, you do impact me. So even by Mark's own rules, he should have signed the seat belt law the first time. He hasn't gotten any better (which is why he was wandering in the woods).

I also take mine off to use the ATM and I do not put it on to move the cars in the driveway but it doesn't bug me if it goes off a few times while I'm doing this. I do not like having to move packages to the floor, however, just to get the silly thing to stop.

If these comments make me a seat belt Nazi then I'll be one. I am just fine with there being a primary law requiring seat belts. But I'd also like it if the chime only worked when it was telling me something I really needed to know.

Jim

I don't think most people here have any real problems with seatbelt laws. I wear mine all the time, unless I'm somewhere I don't need it, and there ARE places where it's not needed. The seatbelt warning in this car is overly intrusive, and that's the issue we have, not with the seatbelt itself.

The Porsche / Ford trick to disable the seat belt gong does not work on the 135. Tried it a couple times last night using different variations. No dice. :/ Back to the drawing board.

Seat Belt Gong Stopper

Done it.

First run is sold out, probably a couple of weeks until the next batch. $15 Velcro keeps it from getting lost, string is long enough to reach either seat belt receptacle. Finish is cheap Powder Coat. Intentionally ugly colors.

WARNING: This device is sold on the conditions:
It will only be used when off road racing, while using an SCCA approved full harness.

PM me for purchase details. Include statement that you will only use this for off-road racing.

I was reading last night in the owners manual that you can turn the "Chime" or "Gong" down in volume through the computer interface.
This is disabled for the U.S. models. You can do it, but it has no effect.

Called Bavarian Tech about their scan tool to see if it had the capability to disable the belt gong. Nope...it does not. They had to comply to the same standards as the auto manufacturer, thus they could not enable this functionality on their scanner. No dice.

string can be easily replaced. Works as advertized. Plus into the receptacle and prevents the chime from going off when something is on the passenger seat.

I think it should be a matter of personal choice as to wear your belt or not. At the end of the day it's you who's going to go through the windscreen and not the government who are trying to enforce it.

I had a good friend who died in an open top jeep. Threee of her passengers were thrown clear when the jeep rolled as they never wore belts, she died because she was strapped in and broke her neck when the jeep rolled over.

I'm sure seat belts save more lives than they do to take them, but it should be down to personal choice. If I am driving around the block I don't put it on, but on the freeway I do. I agree the chime is a pain in the arse and isn't necessary.

We all get in the car and think, shall I, or shan't I - We make that choice, not the car!

Custom orders are welcome, Special Powder Coat colors are a $50 run charge + $1 per part. Pick a color:
http://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-powd...g/powders.html
Anodizing is also an option, about the same price.

If you send me your designer colored string, no extra charge.

To make things a little more clear. I'm a retired guy, living on a fixed income. I do prototyping for a few extras and the mortgage. A friend owed me some CNC time, so I had him make some dummy seat belt ends. I really hate that alarm thing when I have groceries in the passenger seat. The powder coater did me a favor and gave me the quality that I paid for (crap).

If you would like designer colors, please PM for a quote.

The only thing I really hate about the seat belt chime is how little weight you can put on the passenger seat and it will go off. I always wear my seatbelt, so the chime doesn't annoy me; other than when I put enough weight on the passenger seat to make it go off.

Update......while still on my quest for an electrical solution I've tested the following.

I assumed that the seatbelt mechanism is simply acting as an open/closed electrical switch. So that simply closing the electrical circuit will make the software think the seatbelt is attached and stop its yapping. No luck, but here is what I did.

1. Adjust seat to highest setting and slide all teh way rearward.
2. Look under seat. There are three small wire harnesses coming from the seatbelt buckel. Two for the airbags that mate into the Yellow Airbag harness under the seat, and one for the annoying gong show.
3. The gong show wires are yellow and brown and connect to the harness via a small black circular connector. I disconnected this connector.
4. With this connector disconnected, buckling the seatbelt no longer kills the seatbelt light on the dash. Reconnecting this and attaching the seatbelt does turn off the dash belt light. Proof positive that this harness carrys the signal we are looking to alter.
5. 11pm last night in my scorching hot garage, I disconnected the harness and attempted to jumper the wires on the car side expecting to see the dash seatbelt light turn off...meaning the car thinks the belt is buckled.

No luck, this did not trick the car.

So, suspect BMW is using something more to condition the signal in these wires. Perhaps a resistance value of sorts. Looks like I have more research to do.

The view that you are hurting nobody but yourself when you do not wear seatbelts while driving ignores how auto insurance works. We all pay into a big pool of money that is then used to pay claims. So if you cause yourself more severe injuries by not wearing your seatbelt, it is not you that pays the money it is everybody. In addition, if you kill yourself you cause your friends and family a lot more grief. This is the reason I see seat belt laws, and helmet laws for motorcycles, as legitamate for government intervention in the form of laws to encourage us all doing the right thing.

I agree that seat belts cause injuries sometimes. My late wife had some bad bruising from a head on collison years ago (before air bags) and my then small daughter did too. But they were both OK. I do not know but I think their injuries would have been worse without seatbelts. But I accept that there are situations where they do not help and even make things worse. I just think they are pretty rare and not a valid reason not to wear seat belts.

When I rode a motorcycle, a long time ago, my helmet always has painted on it "Helmet Laws Suck". I've never had a big issue with seat belt laws but I mention this to say I understand the sentiment of wanting other people to stay out of something that ideally maybe would be just my business. But that is unrealistic. What we do affects other people.

We all need to remember that driving is a privilege, not a right. There is no inherent right to drive not wearing seatbelts. In my home state, there still is not a primary seatbelt law and the state is going to lose millions in federal highway funds. Our lawmakers feel that a seat belt law is an invasion of our rights, but it is okay to increase our sales tax to 6.25% to help compensate for lost federal funding. How do these people get elected? Easy, less than 30% of registered voters voted in the last statewide election. Duh!!!

Buckle the seat belt and sit on it if you must drive not wearing seatbelts.
