Nothing will show up on the car's BC. You have to own a scan tool and check the DME fault memory. Then you might see a code stored, but no ECL(engine check light) or SES(service engine soon) light. Just one more reason to check your fault memory from time to time.

Mine just failed today, without warning, at a red light.
Model Year/Production date: 06/2008 Miles: 39600 Warranty/Good Will: Out of warranty. Engine Code: N/A Closest Reputable Independent shop wants $1350 for pump and t-stat. Also recommended that I replace the expansion tank for another $200. Quotes from two dealers are at $1700 and $2500 OTD. Pretty ridiculous. Last edited by ucbsupafly; 03-27-2014 at 01:46 AM.. |

Just failed. 2009 with 54,000 miles. Grrr.
~$600 for pump, t-stat and some upgraded bolts from BMW. Mechanic who does side jobs - less than $200 in labor for that and tranny fluid flush.

I just got my service records for my car '08 AW 135i, and my waterpump and thermostat were replaced at 69,800, just 300 miles before I bought it. Dealer charged $1122 for the repair.

128i water pump pro-active replacement?
So is there a concensus? Is the 128i as vulnerable to water pump failure as the 135i? Should I be pro-actively replacing mine? I'm at 82,000 miles on the original water pump and thermostat.

If you just look at this poll it would seem the 128 is immune to water pump failure. I'm waiting for/if a failure. (I hope I didn't just jinx myself)

2008 135i
4/26/2014 (2 days ago) 57,775 Miles (odd numbers eh???) Way outta Warranty No Codes Full Quote for work being done today: $1128.70 = Pump/Thermo/Labor/Kit/Coolant. Decided to drive to Houston from San Antonio to visit a friend. Penny had been making some slightly odd noises but nothing too out there. Now that I think about it, this past week it seemed to be hotter than normal after the usual 12 minute drive from work. Perhaps there are slightly tells when it's going out...but I may have just been lucky and didn't know what I was looking for? Funny enough, went to my first local car meet, asked a guy with another 1 what happens when it goes out. To the T it happened to me 4 days later in the middle of the Houston Galleria area. |

Just had my '09 135i (late 2008 build) go out at about 67,000 miles. No warning signs, and went out while I was driving in ~45 degree weather.

2008 128i. Replaced water pump and tstat at 120,000. Purely wear and tear maintenance; neither failed. Mechanic did discover the belt tensioner was wearing out so that was replaced as well.

Driving home from work, saw the engine overheat sign in yellow then went red when I pulled over. From reading forums, I think water pump 67,000 miles on my 09 135. Still CPO so I hope I'm lucky.

Just failed yesterday on the highway. Nearly killed me - on a bridge with no shoulders.
I have a 2008 with 45k on the clock. Very pissed to have this major of a failure this soon. INPA shows water pump speed deviation (looks like it's at 0 RPM), and over current shut down. Calling BMW NA today to see if they'll do anything. Otherwise replacing it myself. There goes the N55 mids I was gonna order...

Scary Water Pump failure
Last week my 2009 cab suddenly went into limp mode in the middle of the road. I could barely get over to the side of the road. Towed into the dealer and sure enough it was a water pump failure at 58,209 Kilometres (36169 miles). Fortunately I wasn't on the freeway or it would have been a disaster.
Extended warranty picked up the $1200 cost. This is a scary fault in the water pump with no way of predicting a failure. |
