Changing religions: M3 to 1M

Fellow Enthusiasts,

I'm the guy considering changing out his 2011 M3 for a new 1M. I have been under some fire (albeit constructive) regarding my contemplation in dropping my M3 for a 1M. As you can imagine, the M3 community is quite stalwart in its loyalty to the badge.

Getting to the point... my M3 feels fat and I'm drawn to the 1M's performance. I'm discerning enough not to be persuaded by prestige or price. I do care, however, about the 1M's versatility.

For example, is the backseat for real or just a joke? Has any one fit a couple of friends or a baby seat back there? I'm an enthusiast, but I have a life I've got to make fit as my primary DD.

I'd go straight with a Cayman R or a 911 Turbo. The rear seat is good for under 5'10" for maximum of 30 mins.

I think the 1M is versatile enough for the performance it gives you. Ive fit 2 regular sized friends back there. But if you do have to move your seat up a bit so the person behind you has some room.

Also the e9x M3 community have loyalty to the badge but fail to recognize that the e9x went against the heritage of the e30/e36/e46 m3 badge. It's a totally different car from what it used to be. Honestly in my mind the 1M is the successor of the e30-e46 m3. The m3 is too heavy and soft for me, especially after i drove my friends e30 and e36 M.

Your telling someone who needs a back seat to get a 2 seater?

I'm 5'10'' and sat in the back of a 1M from San Diego to Anaheim and back (90 miles each way). It didn't bother me. But I'm used to coupes.

For a lot of people they will have trouble getting in and out of the back seat. This is a small two door car. Is this an occasional need for someone to get in and out of the back or every few weeks?

Also, go drive a 1 series coupe if it is around. Check out the back seat. They are the same.

I'm 6'2", and I've had a 6 foot friend sit behind me for 45 minutes without complaining. Some say the headroom might even be a bit better in the 1 because of the bulge provided for rear occupants. Leg room is pretty close to the 3 as well.

The 1M is a great car from what everyone is saying. If fixed all the problems us 1-series drivers had/have with the 135, in addition to looking badass with those huge flairs.

My advice is to just call around and see if any dealers have one that you can look at and possibly drive (most likely following a refundable down payment haha).

I used to be on the M3 forum too and read your thread. You are not alone! I have an E46 M3 since new in 2002 and have sold my E92 M3 for the reasons you describe-too big, not fun, too gimmicky. I am keeping my E46 forever! A much more fun car. I am getting a 1M. Without calling anyone a poseur, the DCT M3 with all the unnecessary options (iDrive), misses the point of driving and of M.

ive fit 2 6ft+ guys in the back together, but ya I had to pull my seat up. Its not like a 911 or lexus SC backseat.

Just go check out a 128/35 at your local dealer.

Agree with this...had a 95 E36 M3 and a 01 E46 M3. When the e9x came out, didn't feel compelled to continue the tradition. Felt like BMW was reacting to the RS4 (another high revving V8 monster with a weight problem) and got away from the essence of the M3. Frankly, I prefer my RS4 due to the awd for my climate and offering better lineup diversity...it being more rare is an added bonus. The 1M is the car I will rely on to continue my personal M tradition....

Yes, if you need a backseat, go buy a second 911 then you have 4 seats, simple math. Problem with BMW, unless you buy a CSL or GTS, is it is always compromised. BMW at heart is a prestige, everyday luxury car first and performance second.

You should definitely go test drive a 1 series with your family. I think it's versatile enough to be a part-time family car only meaning I wouldn't consider taking it on long distance family trips.

this seems like a strange comment, considering you drive two cars that have a much higher luxury carerformance car ratio than the 1m.

I know what you mean. I miss my old e46. I often park my e92 next to an e46 coupe at work, and I am always amazed how much bigger the e92 appears in comparison.

I think you've made the right decision for the right reason. A few months ago I stopped by a dealer to check out the back seat of a 1 series myself. I think it will probably suffice for your needs.

Same religion, different church. Seating is a little tighter but the people are friendlier. Come on in.

Well lighten up, you are taking this way too seriously. OP complained about the weight so my suggestion is to skip the stepping stone and step into a vehicle that is truly light. Hell, an Elise or Exige too if he can live with it.

For sure, the is350 is a pig. I bought it when BMW lemoned my 135i, at that point in time I was very busy and did not have time for shenagins more common to European cars. Needed a reliable transport with 300hp and rest is history. Lexus is a great car but not so fun when pushed. I am in the process of deciding between a Cayman or GTR. 1M was an interesting alternative that's why I am here besides I was an ex-135i owner.

I have had my 1M just over a month and have driven just over 2k miles. My kids who are 6'1" and 6' have not complained about sitting in the rear seats, they are however comparing the rear seats to our old e46 and our current second car which is a mini.
I have also spent a little time in the back seats and for the hours drive i was there it was ok for me and i am a 5' 11" 200lbs male.

I would suggest that you get yourself down to your local BMW dealer and check out a 1 series coupe for yourself

Thank you, brotha!

Sound advice from all of you who suggested looking to the 135i for guidance. The frequency to which I would expect passengers is only a few times a month and my kids are small. No 6-footers in my family.

You'll be fine then, a comparable backseat is the mini.
