Is it safe to drive it (P0305 Misfire Cylinder 5)?

Hi guys,

Got the SES light 2 days ago after rough idle after a cold start in the morning.
After the car warms up, it does run "fine" but the light still is on. Yesterday, I took it to AutoZone for code reading and it came with code P0305 Misfire Cylinder 5.

Is it safe to still drive the car?

Looking a the history of the car, I don't think the spark plugs have been change. Also, do you have to change the coils?

I was told it can be many things (as usual), but must commons are plugs/coils.

How much is to change spark plugs? I used to do this with my eclipse, but I hear the 135i is a pain.

Please advise.

Thanks in advance

Plugs are an easy change, but you do need the special thin wall socket. Inexpensive and readily available...

Thanks!

Will the SES light be gone after the work is done?

Thanks,

Thanks,
what engine? sounds like a leaking injector

usually misfire engine light goes away once that cylinder stops misfiring. if not you'll need to clear the code

No. You can do damage to other parts of the engine like melt your cats($$$) or wearout your cylinder walls due to the excess fuel washing down that cylinder's wall and into your oil.

I always thought the dme cut fuel to misfiring cylinders.

Ok, so I would says it was easy to get all the parts (well done videos) out and replaced the coil.

BUT, I was going to replace the spark plug too, but I do not have the special spark plug socket. I though what I had was going to do it. Went to 3 auto part stores and they didn't have the socket.

So, I put everything back. With the new coil I turned on the car and still a rough idel (not much), so hope to find that socket and replace the spark plug.

I have ready expended $130 (since the parts are no refundable) If replacing the spark plug doesn't do it, I will probably take it to the dealer.

What else could it be? How much is it to replace an injector (under warranty)?

Next time swap a coil to a different cylinder to see if the misfire moves to figure out whether or not your coil is fine. You can do the same for spark plugs.

Ok, so I took the car to the dealer.

It was the injectors, so they are been replace under the extended warranty (all the injectors - over $4K).

BUT, the dealer is telling me that I MUST do the Carbon blast of intake ports build up. Really? $$$$ over 1K

I called BMW head quarter and get a case of why the carbon blast in not cover if it is link to the injector job and that is something that must be done .

Is that true fact? Any advise on this.

Thanks,

$1K is kind of on the high price side. Most (indi)shops do the carbon cleaning for $500ish. I would just get the car back and see how it runs. It is quite possible your problem is carbon related... but normally the carbon would show more on cold starts as a rough idle.

Have you asked the Service Manager why carbon cleaning isn't part of the extended warranty with the injectors. I know it shouldn't be... but maybe play dumb with the SM and see IF they can cut you a deal on the CC.
