OT: One of the guys i race with proving roll cages work yesterday on pikes peak

Safety equipment at speed means a lot. If you are tracking/racing your car at least have a helmet. I see video from track days all the time with no helmets.

I was up there yesterday and saw it happen from a lower point on the mountain. Talk about one hell of a scary sight to see. From what I heard, the driver was only banged up and was taken down the mountain in an ambulance. The co-driver broke her leg and cracked her helmet though. They carried her in a stretcher back up to the road and she was taken to the hospital via flight-for-live.

Dislocated shoulder for co-driver. The driver (Jeremy Foley that I race with) walked away under his own power. Lucky to have lived through it.

I will help you embed the video:

Foley, originally from Milford, Mich., posted a note on his Facebook page:
"I thought I posted already, but Yuri and I are ok. A little beaten up but nothing major. Thank you so much to everyone for the kindness and support! What a wonderful feeling to feel so loved!"

Really sorry to hear this news, but glad that Jeremy and his navigator are okay. I also autocross with him at a lot of the Texas area SCCA events--great guy and a very good driver. They were lucky to make it out of this one.

I was in Dallas last week talking to him about a ring trip we had been planning for 2013. This video just made me stop and start thinking about where the line is....

There were quite a few crashes on the mountain this year, with most people attributing it to the course being fully paved now. With competitors running r-comps and getting so much grip, there's now less margin for error than there was with the dirt. Check out this video of a car going off into the trees due to the throttle sticking:

Yeah, I think that was the guy that was initially favored in the Unlimited Division. My buddy Dennis Palatov's car took that division on their first time to PPHC and were it not for that stuck throttle, the results might have been very different for the race. I watched him test his car and he was particularly concerned about generating enough downforce to stay on the road at such high speeds in the thin air. Regardless, any racer at PPHC has got cohones of steel and I hope they make a quick recovery.

No doubt about that. Seeing the crash also made me think of the motorcycle and quad riders. Going off the side on one of those would be a whole different situation.

Also OT: head on collision test at 120mph.

Swallowing a hefty 400G and deceleration from 120mph to 0mph in only 68 milliseconds.

Useless to remind to the "Don't try this at home" baseline...
