ELECTRONICALLY LIMITED BREAK IN TIME

I purchased my car over the weekend. I know that there is a break in time of 1200 miles. As I was on my way home I noticed that it wouldn't let me exceed 4,500 rpm. I wasn't flooring it but going up a hill. I haven't found any other threads about this problem. It isn't in the manual either. Does this happen with all new E90's or is their somthing wrong w/ my car?

there is no such a thing as electronically enforced break-in. your problem may just be simply non-agressive shifting of steptronic. try swithching to manual DS mode and see if you can take it up above 4500. if not, maybe you do have a problem.

I briefly redlined my steptronic in manual shift mode almost as soon as I drove it off the lot. I agree, problem is driving style or car. Never heard of this being a problem for anyone esle.

Assuming that you were in D, I think this is because you were going uphill. Had you floored it, you probably would have gotten the automatic downshift, and an immediate increase in your RPM. If you are in too high a gear, the engine is lugging about. I had no problem exceeding 4500 RPM during break in, though I didn't make a habit of doing so.

this would be an awesome feature that maybe you could press a button to sort of protect you from exceeding it, which could also be turned off if you don't give a crap...

It sounds like you may have been lugging the engine. Do you have a manual transmission? Were you in a higher gear?

You can't drive the car to the dealer or call to make an appointment?

i had a problem similar to that where ppl kept telling me my brake lights were always on and when i had it on D or DS it wouldnt go faster than 20 mph, it worked perfectly fine in Manual though.. took it in and found out the brake sensor got loose and the car wouldnt change gears cuz of that, only worked if it was in M

it'll be hurting the car if you need to accelerate quickly for some reason and you get hit by some big truck because the car won't accelerate

What he said, take it to the dealer, they can fix that easily.

Hey Cory, I'm actually experiencing the same symptom as you, as soon as I reach 4500rpm, the fuel cuts off, I'm gonna talk to my dealer too, and will let you know what they say.

Hey Cory, just an update, I went to my dealership. The service foreman took a look and told me that it was in 'partial shipping mode', in that if it was in 'full shipping mode', the radio wouldn't have worked. He said that it's rare for it to be in 'partial shipping mode', but it happens. Anyways, it took him about 30mins to update the ECU/program, now it sings all the way to redline. Hope that helps.

This is the EXACT same thing that is happening to me. So taking it back to the dealership for an ECU update is the only option? Do I need to specifically mention what version etc. or will they take care of it?

My car went to the redline quite a bit during break in

So what's the shipping mode about then - why is that limited to 4500rpm?

Probably to prevent the port jockeys from doing donuts with your car
