Hi Guys,

Here are some more pics of the BMW Performance Short Shift Kit (SSK). It really makes the shifter throws quite short. It is a VERY sweet mod to have. I can't believe I did not do this sooner. Kind of like the CDV delete mod. The car SHOULD have come this way!

Here is a better copy of the SSK part numbers document. Sorry that it is written in German.

Nice, it looks like the SSK accommodates the stock knob/boot really well. I held off because I wasn't fond of the knob/boot that comes with it. Thanks for the pics, I'll have to consider this now...

The original shifter knob and boot/bag fit perfectly. I did not want the stubby perf shifter knob nor the alcantera bag. Plus I save a bunch by ordering all the parts one by one vs the complete SSK set.

I am really quite happy about this mod. I was also worried that some forum members said when their dealer or garage did their install... they reported how the shifter arm tilted more over the right. My expert dealer did my install and the shift pattern is exactly the same as stock. The shifter lever sits in the same spot and the pattern is the same. Just the throws are MUCH less from 1st to 2nd (55mm's is what I measured!).

Hey Guys... this pdf will also show you how the shifterboot comes apart from the console. I still haven't gotten around to install my ZHP shofter knob... but this pdf might help others do so.

Has anyone figured out how to use the stock leather shift boot with the ZHP knob? I thought I remember reading that they didn't fit together so well...

This thread was very useful, thanks for posting Dackel. Did you end up using the stock nob or the 330i ZHP knob?

I ended up keeping my stock shift knob and boot. I never installed the ZHP knob.

Btw... here are the shifter throw measurements:

N54 stock = 80mm's
N54 Performance SSK = 55 mm's
N55 & 1M = 70 mm's

I really LOVE the way the performance SSK feels. It is a GREAT mod to do! I'd say a must have mod like the "CDV delete".

For N55 & 1M guys wanting a SSK... I suspect that you could use this Performance SSK - even though BMW says it is only for N54's. The reason why I say this is Rogue Engineering used a N54 shifter cradle on thier 1M with a modified shifter lever for their SSK - I suspect that either the Performance SSK or by using a N54shifter cradle with a different shift lever(like the Performance one/part) would give you 85% the feel of the Perf SSK.

What height from the base are these measurements taken at?

My car has a SSK installed, but I don't think it's BMW's (2nd owner...). My throws actually seem even shorter than that - especially compared to your side-shots (1-N-2 above).

You went all the way to Stage 2+ on the engine and still have the CDV in?!!!!! That's a lot of unnecessary punishment for your poor clutch... I'd do that one ASAP.

I measured the shifter throws from 1st to 2nd gears. I just used a metric tape measure and found that my stock N54 had throws of 8cm or 80mm. Later when I had my BMW Performance SSK installed I measure the throws again and found out the throws were 55 mm's.

The shifter knob height stayed the same. Also the gear slots statyed in the SAME pleace(plane). Some guys posted that their shifter gates moved up and over to the right. But I believe that was due to an improper installation. My shofter feels alot tighter now, snick snick from each gear. The gear shoft lever does require more force to move it thru the gates... but you get used to that. This is one of THE BEST mods for our cars.

And Btw... the Performance SSK is cheaper IF you order each part separately rather than ordering the complete kit!

Here is that thread were I posted pics of how I measured the shifter throws.

calling all 6MT SSK guys...

Would an N55 car take an N54 shifter cradle? I do want SSK but don't want to buy the parts and have them not fit.

I think it would work. If you go look at the Rogue Enginering 1M SSK... they are using a N54 shifter cradle with their own shifter lever(ie the stick that mounts in the cradle and that the shift knob attaches too).

When the N55 first came out and people started to ask Dan@United about a Performance SSK... Dan said that BMW does not offer a Perf SSK for the N55. But since Rouge is using the N54 cradle... it seems to me that works.

I am not sure IF the Performance shifter cradle will work on a N55. But we can assume (since Rouge is selling a 1M SSK with a N54 craddle) that the OE N54 shifter cradle works on a N55 with a different shift lever.

I have said all along that using the Perf shift lever on a N55 would give you 85% of the feel of the Perf SSK. But no one has gone to the trouble is finding out for themselves.

What we need is a N55 or 1M owner to be the first to try to mod their car's shifter with N54 parts. And... if this works on a 1M it will also work on a N55 - since both cars use the SAME transmision!

Look closely at this photo of Rogue's SSK... you can clearly see the N54 stamping on the shifter cradle.

Hey Guys! I work for TWM Performance and we are currently developing our BMW Short shifters! So far with the prototype testing the shifter looks to be very promising.

Dackelone - I just noticed how you measured your shifter throws, in relation to another recent thread on the N54 / N55. I measured mine at the top of the knob, I'll have to try again with your method and see how they look.
