Hyundai genesis coupe

Coworker just got a Genesis coupe and says his car is better than mine.
He got the 347 hp version in automatic.

I say my 135i has it all over his Genesis. In fit and finish, handling, power and looks. What do all think.

I don't think you'll find many people here that will tell you the Genesis is 'better'...

One of the mags liked the genesis versus a 6 cylinder camero or mustang. That is encouraging but it doesn't put it into the luxury coupe category.

I didn't even realize they came out with a newer version. I just did a quick search :

The 3482-pound 3.8 R-Spec two-door we tested needed 5.2 seconds to hit 60 mph, 0.3 fewer than before. The quarter-mile went by in 13.8 at 104 mph,

If I remember correctly a stock 135I runs 13.0 1/4 mile stock. Add a cobb tune ($700) and it's even faster. Performance wise, you have him.

Stock 135i running 13 flat? I think 13.3-13.5 @ ~105 mph is more realistic for a stock 135i (N54 or N55). I managed a best of 13.5 @ 102 (with a majority of my runs in the 13.7-13.8 range thanks awesome 2.1-2.2 60').

I think its safe to say it's a drivers race, stock for stock. A Genesis is nice but it's not in the same category of being a luxury car like a BMW is. It's more along the of the line of a sports car with some nice interior features.

I agree with the "better at what" poster. Since your coworker's car lacks a man pedal, I'll throw it out completely. Had it been a manual however... I, personally, could have more fun with the gen coupe b/c it has a torsen LSD as opposed to the open diff in the 135 (blasphemy!). I drive a 1M and my buddy has a gen coupe r-spec 3.8. I've driven both many times at autox and on the street. I can honestly tell you the gen coupe is awesome. The chassis is very stiff, the brembo brakes are fantastic, the diff locks fast, etc. The things it doesn't do like a BMW: steering feel isn't great, clutch feel sucks, materials feel cheap, things like that. Performance bang for the buck though? gen coupe is tough to beat.

The 135 is a lot nicer car, but the gen coupe has it's place.

Out of sheer curiosity, I drove a loaded 3.8 Track a couple months before ordering my 128i. The short version is that Hyundai has built more of a muscle car than a sports coupe.

First, the driver is enveloped in the cabin with high sills and fairly poor side/rear visibility (similar to a Mustang, but not as bad as a Camaro -- almost nothing is). It's cool in one sense, but also impractical. The interior materials were actually better than I expected (they were upgraded during the refresh a year or so back) and the fit and finish was pretty good for the price.

And like other muscle cars, it's fairly large and heavy, and it feels like it. Low speed driving felt like a chore. To be fair, I only drove it on city streets but I quickly knew it would wear on me as a daily driver, especially in manual form (see below).

The throttle was touchy, the clutch was not very progressive and the manual shifter was really ponderous. I could probably have adjusted to the first two issues, but the shifter was just frustrating. It's stiff and mechanical, which would be OK if it were also precise, but it's not. It really doesn't help you find the right gear and it fights you in the process. The steering was fairly good and the brakes felt strong (albeit at low speeds). The engine had a solid, meaty sound and nice power -- it even sounded like a muscle car.

On one hand, it was surprising that any Hyundai could drive as well as it did considering how little background Hyundai has in performance cars, but it also seemed clear that Hyundai had benchmarked the car against something other than the BMW 1 or 3 -- perhaps the Infiniti G37 or Nissan 370Z.

With a few tweaks, it could be a great car, but don't let the specs mislead you -- it's a totally different driving experience from a 1.

I had the same experience. Before buying my 135i I drove a brand new 3.8R gennie coupe and, while it was fun, it wasn't the driving experience that I wanted. I wanted something a little quicker, lighter on its feet... Then a guy came along and traded in his 135i, I didn't give it a look until I drove it to the back trade section... That initial impression prompted me to take it out the back exit and give it some beans. Mind was set at that point.


The others are right, they really are two different cars. You'd be better off comparing the Genesis to a Camaro, really. They both have their place, and every person is different. The Genesis may be better for your friend, and your 135i may be better for you. Now, when it comes time to stretch your legs and flex those performance figures though, you shouldn't have to ask who will win at that point.

He says it's better body style and HP.. etc... He is not really a car guy, but I posed the question after I read up on it. Has some impressive stats.

Heavy? You might want to check the specs on it and see how "heavy" it is compared to other muscle cars or the 1er. It's around the same weight as the 1er.

I don't like the Genesis coupe but it's a ok car if someone wants it.

I know the specs and I stand by what I said. As I described, the model I drove was a 3.8 Track manual which is the most comparable config to a decently optioned 135i. Hyundai's website says that model weighs 3,563 which is nearly 200 lbs. heavier than a 135i (and about 350 lbs. heavier than my 128i). It's also heavier than a Mustang V6, though not by much (61 lbs. on paper). Of course the Camaro out-pigs them all, but it's an extreme example of chassis sharing gone wrong.

I recently changed from a 335i Coupe to a 128i Coupe which is almost the same weight difference as you'll feel between a Genesis 3.8 Track and a 128i -- I can assure you it's very noticeable.
