You're relatively new here but of the five people I know who own(ed) N54 powered cars, every single one had at least one HPFP replaced. One of them had four replaced, one had three, and my coworker is on his third as well. The issue may have been resolved but for a good couple of years, HPFP failures were sadly the norm.

How does the 120,000 mile warranty help you when you're stuck on the side of the highway? This happened to many people. Mine gave up as I was pulling onto my street... the day I was supposed to take it on vacation... on my birthday. That is not "reliable" by any stretch of the imagination.

preventative maintenance

they issued a full recall on all effected HPFP's

if yours happened before the recall, well... bad luck in that case, you were an early adopter.

Preventative maintenance on a car with 6k miles on the clock? Give me a break...

Early adopter? The engine had been around since 2007 and my car was a 2010, the last year of the N54 in the 1er.

im with king on this one, from 07-10 hpfps were an absolute problem, this was not a rare or unusual occurance. mine was replaced at 24k in 2010 and i consider myself lucky. LOTS of people had to go through 2+ pumps. It does appear that the revised pump holds up though, you certainly dont hear about it as often.

My recently purchased ...CPO 2010 went in today, after 3 mornings of cold start issues (Engine warning, struggling to idle and loss of power).

Their initial diagnosis is a misfire on cylinder 1, but the problem disappears when engine warms up. So they're keeping it over night for retest in the morning.

So I'm going with unreliable...

did you get a check engine or service engine soon? And was the misfire itself noticeable, or just the symptoms (poor idle, limp mode etc). just curious...

I am a recent new owner of a 2009 135 CV 6spd manual. I am very happy so far, mine is out of warranty but I purchased a 3/36K from Zurich to give me a piece of mind. I have a few friends with N54's and all the same discussion. My only other mention would be the wastegate rattle also now under an extended BMW warranty. I recently traded my 2008 X5 (4.8i) for a 2013 X3 3.5i, so I hope to chime in and give my own impressions between the N54 and N55.

Yeah, I got check engine and symptoms. Poor idling... loss of power. I experienced a similar loss of power when one of my solenoids went on my e46 330i.

Hopefully the dealer has a definitive answer for me this morning.

For me in my situation it works.

So I gather the primary problem with the N54 is the HPFP.
Coming from a S65 M3 I am glad it is not like the connecting rod bearing clearance issues that cause your motor to implode.
I would rather have a bad fuel pump that can be fixed, than total engine destruction!
Is this the most major problem with the N54?

There are other issues.

3rd brake light keeps cracking
HPFP
waste gate rattle / turbos
needs a carbon blast every 40K
window regulator
seat belt issue
WP failure <80K
ie. there are more but not enough time to write. many of the above were covered under warranty, but still not such a good record. I'm hoping the bugs are out of my 1er now.

I had the rarest problem ever on my n54. Engine bed plate oil leak.. 30h of labour+1500$ in parts

I also changed 2 boost selenoids+all new vacuum silicon lines. Problem was underboost 30FF+limp code

Oil fitler house leak, new engine supply coolant pipe,2 water pump in 2 months...

all that problems was between 65000-70000km

If you need the power, then the 135(new as possible) is it. I keep my cars a long time and for me the 128i Sport Pak. is perfect. One caveat- it must be Sport Pak./6MT and they're not easy to find. Great fun as a reliable daily driver, occasional AutoX and track day. Check Mike Miller's comments on 128i reliability " look for one with Sport or M Sport Package, Xenon headlights, a manual transmission and without navigation." My favorite comment came from BMW North America M brand manager, Matt Russell "the 2008-2012 BMW 128i coupe with a 6 speed manual and Sport or Msport package offers the purest BMW driving experience available right now.( Bimmer Mag.,Oct.2012). None of this makes it as fast as a 135i in a straight line but it sure is a hoot in the curves.

I purchased a one owner "09 w/17,000 miles last November from a local dealer. They serviced the car from new. The only issue was a window module near the footwell going bad. I currenly have 29,000 miles on the vehicle. No issues at all. The fuel pump and injectors were changed at 5,000 miles. I researched the motor and vehicle before buying. There's quite a few squeeky wheels ( past or current owners) who've had some bad luck with the car. However, I found that for the most part the cars have been slightly above average for reliability. That was good enough for me. I pulled the trigger and havent regretted it for one second. I did invest in the BMWhat iPhone app and wireless sending unit. Its an amazing and inexpensive system to help trouble shoot and code the car. I highly recommend it. I'm very good with PM. If something is broke or loose I fix it immediatly. I think that's crucial with a BMW.

In my research on this board (and on the web) it seems like there have been a significant number of issues with the 135 (and to a lesser extent the 335). I also saw that Consumer Reports gave it a below average in reliability. I understand that some of these issues are due to the HPFP, but are there other significant issues with the car?

By the way, I test drove a 135 with my wife and the "check engine light" came on about 3 minutes into the drive. We turned around and brought the car right back to inform the salesperson helping us. His comment was, "Oh yeah that's just an issue with the emissions or with the gas cap not being tight." (The gas cap was tight, by the way.) I realize this was only one car, but it has spooked me a bit, especially after reading some comments on this board.

So, is the 135i reliable or not? (I'm looking at a 2009 model, by the way.)

No.
