Only 10,000 miles on summer tires?
The tech at Discount Tire said my continentals tend to wear out after 10,000 miles. Can that be right? He said "summer tires" tend to wear out very fast. My tires are almost bald in the middle. one is 10, 000 miles, the other 11.000 miles

Depends on how aggressive a tire is. If you go with a Max Performance Summer like Pilot Super Sports I would expect you to get over 20k miles on it. Now go with an extreme performance tires like Hancook RS 3s and if you get 10k I would say that would be good. I got 2500 miles out of my last set of RS3s....although I did do 6 track days on them.

For curiosity, do you follow recommended tire pressure per door jamb? Are the tires stock sizes? Is most of your driving as a single occupant? I've found this combination to wear the center of the rear tires faster than the outer or inner edges of the tread. My 'new' inflation method is to run a couple less psi in the rear tires.
Are you using the new Conti EC Sports or the older EC DW? I'm considering a set of the EC Sports but don't want to hear this about early wear! |

I've got Bridgestone RE760s (Ultra High Performance Summer) and my rears are shot after 11K miles.

Performance tires (aka summer tires) are softer for better grip and accordingly tend to wear out faster than say a factory Camry tire. But 10k of freeway travel sounds pretty quick, I tend to get 20 - 25k in those situations.
I think the tire pressure question is a good one, folks usually wear the outside edge of their tires cornering on-ramps and such, just the middle kind of implies they are over-inflated. Checking your alignment is a thought too, even if it drives straight it still could be pretty far out. Although I wouldn't expect it to wear down the middle but instead along the inside or outside edges, so maybe not. Odd issue. |
