Cool New System for Mounting Phone or GPS to Dash
Just came across this cool new system for mounting a phone or GPS to your dash. It's called Steelie - you can see it here: Steelie.
For a decent discount on their stuff, you can go to Kickstarter (a start-up funding site), and hope they get enough backers in the next month or so. Steelie at Kickstarter. (BTW: Kickstarter pledges are backed by Amazon.com.) The only downside I see to the Steelie system is that you have to stick the mount to the back of your phone/GPS. For a GPS, that probably doesn't matter, but for a phone, it may make it tough to fit the phone in a belt holster, etc.

That's a pretty neat idea.. I don't even think the metal behind the phone would bother me that much, it's totally worth it for the convenience. Right now I have the Navigon app for the iPhone and have a window mount in the car for it.. I feel that this would save me more space.

After installing and using the Steelie phone mount, I can confidently report that this is an excellent product - the following video I created should cover the basic details pretty well:

At first I didnt see an application for this for me personally.
But now that I am picking up a small capacity itouch to do GPS laptiming for my trackdays on my motorcycle, im thinking why not get a blue tooth obd2 adapter and then be able to run aux gages right on my touch, such as boost, iat, etc.

Interesting video. The only disadvantage of that location is it is pretty far from the windshield - you have to move your eyes well off the road.
I have a Garmin on the BMW mount on the right side of the instrument cluster. The wires come out from under the hood over the guages. This looks like it could allow you to mount the phone to the left of the gauges with the wires coming through the dash and out from under the hood over the gauges. With torque running that would be neat. Jim

I saw these at a car show awhile back. I was wondering if you've had any problems with your iPhone falling off when you hit a pothole or pretty good bump.
Does it stay connected? Does it move around with vibrations? Cheers, Tom |

Wife got me one for X-Mas. The magnet is very strong. It will not/has not fallen off. The one thing I did a little different was that I did not center the mount on my phone so I can't reallt use it horizontal. The reason was because I use an Otterbox Commuter case on my IP5 and like the idea of sticking the mount on the Apple logo which has a cutout on the case. By doing this, the mount is flush with the case. Only drawback is because it's off center I can only use it vertical which is fine with Apple Maps/Google maps.

Question: what power and usb cables are you using to connect to your phone? Pretty sure mine are nowhere near long enough to make the trip to the dash. |

I have Apple's standard USB-Lighting cable tucked under the center console and it reaches my phone fine which is mounted above the radio. I also bought a 1/8" mini cable long enough.
