Car in shop...again, experiencing long cranks
Dropped my 135i off at the dealer on Friday to have them fix the bubbling film on the steering wheel. While it was there, told them that I was starting to experience long cranks again. They checked it out and found low pressure in something or other, gave me a loaner for the weekend and said it would probably be ready on Wednesday. I sure hope it isn't the HPFP again....if it is, this will be the third replacement!

Got car back today
Dealer said it was related to a software problem. He said there were 2 updates i was missing...strange since the car was just there not too long ago and has been at the dealer about 5 times since I bought it. Does this sound right?

No, sounds like dealer mumbo jumbo. About to take my 08 135i in for the 6th time for engine troubles. 3rd HPFP probably for me.

Had to ask...are any of these HPFP issues taken place since the latest and greatest software&new pump upgrade 3/2010 ....my car shit on me stock at 9400 miles 200 mile after i bought it from BMW in 3/2010 and has run like a champ ever since the fix ...i am a avid Shell V-Power 93 user for the past 6 years so maybe this helps.. or the way your car is behaving seems like nothing helps...sorry to hear about your troubles man but i quess when it's running good it makes it easier to deal with this shit...BMW should buy back your car and give you another....

The amount of gas in your tank has absolutely zero to do with the HPFP failure.

I wasn't trying to sound like a dick but if you think about it it's just so unlikely. The fuel pump has no idea how much gas is in the tank. Think about a beer funnel - The drain is on the very bottom of the funnel which feeds into a hose to your mouth. If you could not see how many beers were poured into that funnel would you be able to tell when you were almost finished? It's the same concept. The pump doesn't have a clue how much gas is in the tank as it feeds from the lowest possible point.
On the Lotus forum where people were doing some SERIOUS track romps I used to hear of people going around extremely high speed turns and occasionally losing power because the fuel would shift but I highly doubt anyone is doing that type of driving in these cars. Mine failed with a nearly full tank of gas and I never let it go below 1/4 tank and I commute veeerrrrryyy slooowwwwlllyy in horrible traffic.

There used to be an issue with several Ford models (Lincoln Towncar was a popular one) that had fuel pump failures when run below 1/4 tank. Below 1/4 tank the pump was no longer submerged in gasoline so it ran hot, then overheated and eventually failed. Just out of habit I always refill at 1/4 tank, Chevron or Exxon 93 octane.

Correct. It's under the hood and attached to the motor.
