Yes, dip your finger in the (new) oil and lube the O-Rings, then put them on.

Probably a stupid question but I see where I jack the car up but then where do I put the jack stands? Do they go just forward of the jack mount? It is hard to tell b/c of the underbody cover. I don't want to damage anything. Thanks.:iono:

This is what I did. I jacked up the car using the rear jacking points (per manual, the points in front of the rear tires) high enough so that I could slip a jack stand underneath the front jacking points (points behind the front tires). I repeated this step for the other side.

I also cut out some blocks of wood to use as inserts into the stock mounting points. while they seemed to work ok they ended up slightly cracking when it was all said and done. I plan on ordering some aluminum stock (square 1 inch bar), cut it, and make some new, solid inserts.

I just used Rhino Ramps, they are cheap and easy and get the car high enough for the job. With the cost of the ramps, oil kit, etc you are still cheaper than having the dealer do it one time.

Any issues with the ramps sliding out on you while trying to drive up them? The jack I was using today wouldn't go low enough so I had to drive up onto 2x6's and they kept sliding out on my slick garage floor. Just wondering if I will have the same issue with the ramps?

Really cool video, but maybe I'm confused. According to http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...e/Default.aspx you get oil changes for "free" (built into the price of the car) for 4 years.

BMW Maintenance Program: One of the most comprehensive maintenance programs in its class covering all factory-recommended maintenance, oil service and fluid service, as well as items that need replacement due to normal wear and tear - such as brake pads, brake rotors and wiper blade inserts.

Is there an advantage to doing it yourself? Better oil?

The BMW free oil change is every 15,000 miles. Most people prefer shorter intervals.

Rhino ramps have rubber blocks at the leading edge that grab the floor when the tires first start going up the ramps. The rubber pieces can fall out while carrying the ramps around and if you don't notice it.. the ramp will slide the next time you use it.

Is it possible to remove the filter housing when there is oil inside the engine? The O-ring shifted as I was tightening it. I can see the O-ring in between the plastic housing and the metal housing.

How many washers are on the drain plug? I see one on there that looks like a typical steel washer, it doesn't look like the crush washer. Does this stay or does it go?

One washer.. the new oil filters come with a new copper washer for the drain plug.

Loosen it and let it sit for a minute, so it'll drain. If you haven't started the engine since you filled it, you can take it right off. Either way, you're going to need a new o-ring.

Thanks for the reply. I saw in the check list thread to remove the "washer" and put on the "crush gasket" so I decided that must be the case, and figured two washers was probably bad anyways and all seems well (so far).
