PSS replacing RFT's - Do I need to have alignment work at BMW?
I have conflicting recommendations from service providers about replacing the RFT's on a 2013 M-sport 135i with the PSS. fronts are 215/40R18 and the rears are 245/35R18.
for example, I hear the following "advice": 1. will "push" when turning - What does that mean, more effort on my part turning the wheel ? (this place is pushing the RFT's) 2. will need toe-in adjustment, and BMW needs to do the alignment or there will be excessive front tire wear - Is this true? (this place won't do an alignment on a BMW) I've read many post on this and don't recall needing a toe-in after replacing the RFT with PSS. Do I need to do this? Thanks! |

I replaced my RFT with PSS about 10K miles ago. I did not do an alignment. Unless you see uneven wear on the tires you are removing, I see no reason to do an alignment. I put the same size tires as came on the back all the way around - fronts too. I did that for rotation purposes but also to reduce understeer in the front.
When people talk about pushing they are often talking about understeer. PSS have more grip than RFT so the limits increase due to the tire change. I don't see why people would talk about them understeering. The point at which the car will do that with PSS tires is a higher cornering load than with the original tires. BMWs are set up to understeer but that isn't a tire issue.

Replacing wheels and tires doesn't really change your alignment. Toe, camber, and caster are not affected.
If you change your offset it can affect how the car handles, and in the front it will change your scrub radius which affects how the car steers, but that's nothing an alignment job can change back to factory. Getting an alignment is a good idea periodically regardless, so if it has been a while this may be a convenient time. Any time you notice uneven wear you should have it checked.

IF your car tracks straight now and doesn't pull(change direction) while under hard accel or braking) and your steering wheel points straight while on the highway... you will be fine with just tires. But all that said... its always a good idea to check your alignment every year or two. Especially when spending $$$ on new tires. Don't want them all chewed up 6K miles later.

Will have the alignment checked after replacing the RFT's -had an alignment done about 750 mi ago with oil service as it was out of align and there was some outside wear on the fronts. It since tracks straight and the steering wheel points straight on the highway, and we have decent roads around here, so hopefully I'll be all set. Thanks everyone for the input!
