Anyone already replaced their 1M tires with Michelin Pilot Super Sport?

As the title suggests, I am curious to learn if there is already anyone who owns a 1M and already replaced the stock PS2s with the Super Sports. This is the one and only "modification" that I am planning to do when the car arrives, probably after the run in and while the car will be in the garage for its first oil change.

Basically, after following this Forum since October 2010 and reading every single review of the car, I came to the conclusion that 1M has two possible (and mostly predictable) weaknesses: 1) ride stiffness for daily use 2) wet traction due to the level of torque and to the suspension setup.

I assume that since Pilot SS are reported to be a major upgrade on PS2s on all and especially those (wet behaviour, comfort + tread wear) fields, I can simply minimize those two weaknesses without altering the driving nature of the car or making some compromises.

Any experiences or further thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

They are available since some time. Much more expensive than the fronts of course.

I'll be getting them as soon as I wear the tread off the stock PS2s, which shouldn't take me too long

We are all making an effort to need new tires. I've never wanted to kick a car sideways more than my 1M.

The moment I burn through the factory PS2s, I'll be replacing them with the PSSa. Likely in 265/35/19 fitment up front, 285/30/19 rear. (which is perfect for the 9" and 10" stock rims).

I have the PSSs currently on my RS 4 in a 275/30/19 fit on all 4 corners, and can say they are the best summer tire I have ever had. With that said, don't expect it to do miracles in the wet, marginal improvement (if any) in those conditions over the PS 2. And you really need to build heat in them to get the full potential out of that tire.

Just watched the Automobile mag (Jason Cammisa) video on another post and have to throw in my 2 cents here:

Why would anyone replace a high-end and EXPENSIVE tire like the PS2 which comes stock on many other top-tier cars like 911s etc, straight away and before actually USING the PS2s until they needed replacement? It's not like it's a POS tire like a lot of other OEMs are (G-Y Eagle RS-A comes to mind). Nor is the less-than-professional driver going to be able to gain a really significant performance improvement between PS2s & SSs driving on the street...realistically. Unless you're SCHUMACHER of course.

And if it's for track and an experienced driver, then it's straight to R-compounds on a second set of dedicated track wheels.

Then again, if someone has money burning a hole in their pocket, why not I guess??

You sure those will fit on those size rims without giving you too much sidewall flex?

Yup, for sure. BMW has put the 'skinniest' tire for the rim. 245 on a 9" and 265 on a 10". Optimal on those would probably be 255/275, but easily you can do 265/285 which will likely be the way I go once the stockers are exhausted.

Right now I am running 275s on 9" rims of the PSSs, and it is perfect.

You can take a look at the TireRack figures where they tell you what size tire can be fit on what width wheel. I've actually seen M3s with 295 rears on the stock 10" Competition wheels, with no rubbing nor pronounced 'bulging' of the tire, though I personally would not go that far. You do want to keep weight (especially rolling mass) down.

The PSSs are a lot firmer than the PS2s, so there won't be an issue with flex. They are also very square (should be called Super Squares), more so than even the Bridgestone RE11s, and their new sidewall technology (use of spirally wound Twaron) makes them very firm.

What are your thoughts on ADVAN AD08s

Sorry, not had first hand experience with the Advan 08s. TR's customer reviews are generally a great source for feedback.

Ya the reviews seem to be good with the PSSs, when is there 265/35/19 coming out?

They are roughly the same price as the AD08s with the rebate Tirerack is offering. Will be tough to choose...

I understand that in US the rear sizes are not available yet but in Europe they are.

In my case, my car is arriving in September and it will be delivered to me in another country (Chile) where I will be living and working for some time. My concern is, in that market there is not much alternative for PS2s plus the pricing is abusive. So, I thought if I could ship new PSS set with my furnitures and other goods there won't be any cost for me since the shipment is a fixed cost and there is more than enough place available. I could even sell the original PS2 set there without using them and take all my money back that I will be paying for PSS or even make some small profit due to price differences. Or I can just keep PS2 set for track use etc.

So, there is no cost for me to talk about. However, I found out that the rears are "available but must be ordered from France which takes more than 1 month"! which sucks big time cause I can't wait that long. So, I thought about upgrading the rears with an available size: 275/30 19s, the guys at the tire shops say this makes more sense than 265/35s and there won't be any real change to the set up to worry about. Slightly more rubber width could do even better. Any thoughts about this change? I need to decide quick on this.

Moreover, now I started reading equally or even better reviews about the new Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's. Again not yet available in US I guess Maybe members from UK could help me; anyone tried these ones or heard anything?

The new M5 is coming with PSS so does all the other future M cars, that's my understanding. And the only real reason 1M stays with PS2 and in these dimensions is because they have them ready in their stock which they want to get rid of. I am not saying it is a bad tire, I am saying that it is already outdated with newer products and after all I read I feel like 1M really needs and deserves the best tire, especially to tackle with the wet traction and comfort issues.

Sorry for the long post, I know that there are some very experienced guys among us and I would appreciate very much to hear from them on what I am planning to do.
