I figured you don't know what you don't know and took the time to call AAMI this morning to compare them with my Shannons policy.

$20 less per month, for an agreed value after listing all modifications $6,000 less than Shannons and no choice of repairer.

Shannons has had my premiums for about 5 years now, and at this rate their going to keep getting them. The phone staff at Shannons are always good to talk to and know their stuff, I often have a chat to them about what they're doing to their cars when I make changes to my policy.

I have a very cheap policy at the moment, but might go with someone else who are happy with mods.

Try BMW Finance & Ryno(Lloyds) -I've had my insurance with one of them for years - always competative, and good cover, terms, excess, etc....

I haven't looked for a while, but look closely at the specifics with AAMI (I guess we should always look at the fine print - but who does). With AAMI, it used to be that you couldn't pick the repairer (other than which one of their reparieres you use). They didn't guarantee new or OEM parts (but they do guarantee the repairs for a few years - which they see as achieving the same result). They used to assess using digital photo's, and then give the work to the lowest bidder. "Cause it's so easy to see a bent sub-frame from a photo - go figure!!

There's a reason they are always the cheapest quote - ask yourself why!!!

My repairer, who specialises in BMW & Porsche won't even quote on work if AAMI are the insurer - says he's never won the work, so it's a waste of his and the customers time even quoting.

All this could have changed - but it seems they are still the consistent low price marker

But will they insure fully documented modifications?

Shannons was always great for my modded STi. Plus 10% off just by having CAMS licence.

sounds like I may need to switch to Shannons after my new additions. I can see on their website in order to provide an online quote there are alot of requirements that you must meet once of which is: Your car is not your main form of transport and you don't use it on a daily basis. I guess that I need to call them for a quote?

Need to look at your own advice here. I'm pretty sure I pointed this out in the previous insurance thread I started a couple of years ago, but 'ing is a lost art these days...

Ryno's policy, while "cheap" is a case of devil in the detail. Now I haven't reviewed this policy in two years, but previously when I looked at what they'd pay on a windscreen glass claim, there was a limit of $750. I called BMW to ask what the cost of a replacement windscreen was if you had it damaged beyond a simple patch job, and the answer was north of $1,300 depending on sensors and so on.

So you might save a few dollars on premium, but claim time could see you out of pocket a bit in this example.

Interestingly today my fiancee (who's daily drive is with my Shannons policy) was reversed into at a shopping center carpark. The claims experience with Shannons (my first) was excellent and handled brilliantly.

When I had to claim with AAMI, they allowed me to pick one repairer, and one of their own.

Their own repairer did win the quote, but again even if I let them choose the 2 repairers they would only use BMW approved Body Shops, so that's who did the work.

They advised that only new genuine parts would be used as the car was less than 4 years old, and with my repairs no parts were repaired, everything was just replaced with new genuine parts (which I have verified after having the car on a hoist to check the work).

Not the most flexible, but not as dodgy as some people seem to make out.

26yo / Agreed value of $80k on an 09 135i paying $906 per annum with all mods listed, I'm pretty happy with them.

At renewal may check out Shannons though, always just been too lazy because they won't do an online quote!

Has anyone claimed with BUZZ? Someone mentioned they are with them? I have just done an online quote, and only cost $200 more than what I am paying (I am paying a very cheap rate at the moment). I put the mods on and it only add a $800 excess on the car without any extra cost in premiums!

Can anyone see any catch - want to do as much research as possible for the new car .

Try to get an advance PDS from them and see the details - only way you can be sure

Also - if you do get a copy - be sure to check their excess requirements, and what info you need from the person responsible in order to be free of excess.

Best of luck!

In 8 days i'm 25.

AAMI just quoted 1145 for Comprehensive with Hire Car option. Time to end my pay-by-the-month and take a full year with someone. NRMA should be the go.

I guess this is all about previous experience, be it good or bad. And unfortunately, the details of insurance policies are complex and constantly changing.

FWIW, I can't see a $ limit relating to a windscren claim in the PDS currently on the Ryno website. But they are there for other items, like replacement keys $1000 per year

Nearly learnt the hard way when my first WRX was attempted stolen and burnt out - all on my birthday! GIO said because i needed the person responsible's name, contact details, they wouldn't pay up.

We kindly alerted them to the fact the Theft/Fire Damage part of the policy is extraneous to the excess requirements. They gave in
