hmm.. Checked out a 1M today. Condition not the greatest. Was surprised to see a fire extinguisher under the drivers seat for a car that apparently hasn't been tracked unless this is a oem option.

No, not OEM. I have noticed that a lot of people add them, even if they don't race . . . think it looks cool perhaps?

Checked out another one today that was in pretty good condition. Actually took this one for a test drive.

Apologies if I hurt anyone's feelings but I was a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong the car was nice to drive just didn't have the performance to match. I'm a bit torn now on what to do.

I expected the car to pull harder than it did and seems to run out of puff over 5k. Looking at the dyno charts of the stock car it is expected (sharp drop in torque) but at the same time the charts I have seen show around ~340hp at the wheels which is no what it felt like. Surprised that a lot of the ecu tunes that I have reviewed are pushing an afr of 12.0 at top end from the graphs I have seen.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone that has a tuned 1M is local on the north side in Sydney and willing to catch up for a chat and coffee etc one night. It would be much appreciated to help ensure I making the correct decision.

Cheers,
Michael

The 1M is a fun car that you can throw the tail out at will. It is certainly not the best performing car in terms of both power or handling. It uses the same engine as the 135i so what you are feeling is expected. I think you should consider a supercharged M3 instead or just go with a mod 135i. Yes a tuned 1M FBO will give you that kick you are after and doesn't run out of puff till a little later, but if you don't love the 1M on your first drive, I don't think it is the right car for you.

I am sure Ian or Joe can help you out there.

I think your first drive impression of the 1M is relative to what you have been driving. Going from a heavily modded Z to a stock 1M would be a bit disappointing.

My personal experience having the Audi RS4 for 5 yrs changing to the 1M was in a way similar to your first experience. The power delivery of the 1M is strong with the surge of turbo boost at 3500rpm but it doesn't go all the way to redline whereas my RS4 felt strong and linear all the way to red line at 8250rpm, not to mention to glorious NA V8 exhaust note. But now that I have the 1M for over 6 months, I am thoroughly enjoying the 1M and not really missing my RS4. In terms of handling and fun factor, I prefer the 1M way better than my previous RS4.

I think if you have more time to drive and explore the 1M's handling capabilities, you will find the 1M a pure driving pleasure.

Michael, if this is genuine, I live at Seaforth and have a modded 1M you can take a look at. With the mods I'm running, the last Dyno was circa 290kw.

Mods Include:

Akrapovic titanium exhaust with wireless kit;
AFE Single Cone (Covered) Air Intake Stage 2;
AR Ceramic Coated Down Pipes (3 Inch);
Evolution Racewerks Charge Pipe with Forge Divertor valves;
Evolution Racewerkes Competition Series N54 FMIC
Turner Oil Catch Can

We can probably convince Ian and Joe to come along as well??

Depending on when and where you guys want to meet and if I am available, I am more than happy to meet up. Mine only have N55 midpipe and a Cobb tune.

Guys, Thanks for the responses. @emack and @Ian not sure who pavo is and the request was genuine. If I wasn't then I wouldn't have listed the car for sale on the Z forum located here which is dated pre your posts.

http://zclub.com.au/forums/index.php...eaps-of-parts/

Would be great if there are more owners. This way it won't be a biased conversation. Well it could be because you are all 1M owners.

I live Chatswood way so seaforth is pretty close. I'm pretty flexible but I just need to work around some tight project delivery timelines so open to suggestions.

drjkel. It is in the FS section and requires access. Have attached screen shot below. I consider the mods and performance of my Z average compared to others. It was a awesome learning exercise as all the work to car was done by me. Only work outsourced was the machining and bottom end build.

All I appreciated the honest responses however I think some of you miss understood my posts by commenting that it is the wrong car for me (which it may be).

I'm after a car that that it enjoyable to drive, handles and also performs well. All I said was that I bit disappointed in the power delivery of the car based on my expectations. I still believe this car is an option based on emack post. If this is the power figure at the wheels coupled with the instant torque these cars are known for imo it will have a good power to weight ratio to be a nice car.

If you all were satisfied with the 1M then you wouldn't have modded it in the first place. I was in the same situation with my Z. Looked nice, handled well just under powered for its weight. Just ended up taking it too far and not looking to repeat the same mistakes.

Some have mentioned a supercharged M3. Unfortunately a low K example is out of my budget and not really keen on boosting a NA engine again.

Well looking at your FS thread you put at least 45k into it to get 280kW.

With these N54 engines you can spend about 2k and get the same amount of power. Tune + meth!

Though I can't say I've heard of any 1Ms owners on meth. Not in Australia anyway.

I owned a 350z way back... Great torque, but no where in same league as an N54/N55. Fantastic handling though, better than the newer 370z
Let me know when you plan to go!

@Froop. I put in 12k to get a strong engine to take the punishment. The rest of the $$ was for other aspects. 10psi made 280kw. imo 280-300kw was the good balance for the car. Anymore and it is unusable

@Ian. No power trip here just after the balance.
