I think you hit the nail on the head, it isn't really about weight, but about fun. It feels much lighter at the wheel and underfoot than other cars, and if you like it, and it puts a smile on your face that is all that matters.

If you are an absolute weight freak, wait for the M3 CSL...

They made the car bigger to appeal to a more mass market crowd and to stay a step ahead of the TL, G35 and IS350. Unfortunately this added more weight but they also increased the HP on the car.

The 3 series has evolved into a bigger car each time and each time it endured some scattered criticism in the beginning but it will still be another timeless classic that will dominate the entry-level luxury sports sedan segment for the next 5-6 years of its styling life.

if you want a lighter car, you'll have to pay more for it. For example, the 5-series doesn't weigh that much more than the 3-series 'cuz they incoporate more of the light-weight materials, but I've seen articles saying that when the 5-series gets into a fender-bender, it's a write-off as the cost for repairing the damage is more than replacing the car, so yeah, if you're willling to shell out more money upfront and later on for repairs, they can make the 3-series out of aluminum, carbon fibre, magnesium and all that jazz, for, say 40K US, are you gonna buy it? you'll probably bitch about how expensive it is then...

I am in the middle of a European Delivery right now and traveling through Poland. Everyone here says the car is huge. Parking is a pain, not because of the width, but the length. Everyone here drives these short Skodas and my E90 sicks way out in the parking lot. Of course when I get back to the States it'll fit right in.

If BMW puts together a ZHP/M-sports 335, it would be nice to try and keep the weight down. Maybe put the sunroof back on the options list. Ditch the heavy run-flats. Even a hundred pounds would be a help.

I was about to add something along that line...

In the Car and Driver comparo the 330i won a few months back, it was the lightest car of the group.

Granted, it was pitted against an S60 instead of an S40, and had it been the latter, the Volvo would have been the lightest car. But that car is a Mazda 3 derivative and is much smaller than a 3-Series (Too small in fact for this price range).

So along that class of cars, the new 3 is on the lean side.

I dont know why people complain about the weight. I think that the lighter the car, the more expensive it is to fix and the less protection we get from the body. I know some guy who fixed up his CRX like crazy. It's pretty much paperweight right now. In an accident his car would crumble like a can. If BMW made the car lighter, they would also decrease the HP and torque. Think about this: the 5 series is a bigger car but since they use lightweight materials on it they didnt even bother to increase HP and Torque. What if they made it 400lbs lighter?? Well, what if they also made it with 40hp 40lb ft torque less?? Look at Porsche's. Those cars are pretty light IMO thus most of them dont have that many HP. They're still fast as heck. IF they were heavier they will get more power to compensate for the "extra weight".

Is that your excuse for not wanting to buy the best sedan in its class? Not a believable excuse, which is why theclay posted what he did. I am with theclay on this one in as much as your first post is very weak.

It also seems that you haven't tried it out and if you have, not very well. Anyway, one more car for a serious BMW fan to buy.

I think it is funny that since Jamie posted the weight specs of competing cars, the pro-fatty people have gone quiet...

I have nothing to say about the actually weight. To me it has not hindered performance one bit.

I only stated the E90 looks slightly bloated to me on the sides. However since you are looking for a response I offer you the following from Top Gears UK web site....

Ugliest car of the year
This category was very simple - a car should be a thing of beauty. All of the companies here forgot that, and built a car that would turn the pope to drink. Nominees were: the Ssangyong Kyron, the Ssangyong Rodius and the Ssangyong Musso. The winner, this year, in a surprise decision from the judges, was the BMW 3 series - the world's most tedious-looking vehicle.

Please note it reads judges...

I do not think the e90 is ugly by a long shot. But some people are turned off by the looks and IMHO the bloated sides are one of the reasons.

(Sorry, thought since you were in Glendale, you might be a Armenian)

Weight is a bigger matter for some people. I prefer not to drive tanks.

i just wish the car was around 3100 lbs
