I'm only averaging 18 - 19 mpg on my 330i. I do mostly city and backroad but I expected to get better than that.

I'm still in the break in period. Just turned 1K miles so I'm not reving it past 4500.
What kind of mpg will I get when I start getting on it?

Your average will go up in time. Mine is well broken in and I get about 25 for combo driving, 34 on pure highway (long trips), and I don't drive stop and go but I'd guess I'd get around 20 tor that.

I got 225miles at around 80mph on 8 gallon of Shell 91, that is 28mpg, so I am happy. But about 90% of highway, 10% of local, that drop to around 23.5mpg.

hey, did you guys notice that the e90 get better mpg at speed between 70-90?

When I first got my car, my MPG was horrible! Like 16 to 17mpg!! As I put more miles on, it got better, but slowly. I'm now at 10,xxx miles and I started to notice around 9,xxx miles or so, my car was getting 21-22mpg. Now I can go 400 miles on a tank if I'm not to heavy on the gas! Danny

I drive all day in traffic (all local), a lot of stop and go's... and I still get 22 mpg / about 325 miles per tank.

I have 3500 miles and am averaging between 19-22 miles per gallon on a full tank and with a 80/20 split between city and interstate driving. Most is local stop and go type of suburb traffic. If I run an entire tank on the interstate, driving with the cruise control, I get 28-30 miles per gallon. The efficiency of the vehicle continues to get better as I tack on more miles, and this trend should continue for at least another 6500 miles for me.

i would not entirely say it will go down in time because i already have almost 4k on my car and i still get 18-19mpg, mostly city driving. i almost never get 300 miles per tank.

What was the actual consumption in your previous car vs. its EPA estimate? You're expressing displeasure with no context. If you previous car go below average mileage then it's you and your drive, not the car. If the your previous car got good or better than expected mileage and the E90 doesn't then you might have legit questions.

Do you drive harder or differently in the E90? Accelerate faster from stops?

My wife drives the E91 much differenly than I drive the E90 and it is evident in our mileage. However, when we swap cars for a day or two the expected result occurs - the E91 gets better mileage and the E90 gets worse mileage.

This is an excellent point. I drive my vehicle like a bat out of hell and my wife is very easy on her car. I get the efficiency I do because I drive hard. When we swap out for the day, the E90 gets much better mileage because my wife is driving. If I was not always late, I might drive better and get better fuel efficiency.

nope but what i noticed is that the number keeps on going up when im between 2000 and 2500 RPM and my mpg meter points below 30mpg. i also noticed that the counter goes up when im at the same range of RPM and MPG meter on 5th or 6th gear above 60MPH. how weird. i notice these things.

what confuses me is that when i keep my RPM lower and keep the meter pointing towards higer MPG the counter goes down. im kinda confused whether i would follow the MPG meter or the countdown thingy to decide on the most efficient way of driving the car.

i get 22+MPG with combined freeway and city driving.

I only get ~18mpg on my 325i after 6k miles and was less than 16mpg for the 1st few tanks.

I was getting 17 with my 3.0 X5 5spd. I don't remember what the EPA estamate was on that.

I'm not driving this car as hard as the X5 cause I'm still in the break in period.

Your mileage will improve after break in. It's gradual. If most of your driving is city/town driving though it's never going to be "Great".

Alot has to do with whether you have manual or automatic but more has to do with the way you drive.

For city driving do the following:

Don't lead foot. If you have a manual shift to higher gears soon and often, try not to let the tach go above 2000rmp before shifting.

Do this and you'll be amazed at how much your mileage will improve.

You're doing better than me. Avg MPG is at 17. Current mileage 1,1XX. My experience with BMWs in the past is that it will improve with more and more mileage on the vehicle.

Is it possible that since the tires are stickier when we first roll off the lot, that our mpg goes down? Or is it pure mechanical, in terms of the engine needing to break in that's causing the bad mileage.

On my previous car, I noticed my mileage significatly decrease when I purchased new tires, -60 miles per tank. But it slowly improved over time. In my 330, I noticed I got terrible miles initially too, but now it's doing great... my friends tease that my car must get bad mileage, until I mention that I avg 28 mpg.

Actually the ECU lets the engine run richer when it's new. It's not because of the tires.

I drive mostly highway, and get darn near the 29 promised by the EPA sticker on the window (27mpg)

if you drive mostly city is there any reason you can think of that you'd be getting better than the EPA's 20mpg city rating?

As so many other have stated, give your enggine time to run in and settle. Mileage should improve but it depends on your driving style and conditions. Stop start or nice long drives between stops. How hard are you starting off the lights? All there factors and more determine how well or poorly you do between tankfulls.

Nonetheless, enjoy your car and dont concern yourself with gas useage too much. It costs what it costs.
