Who reviewed the 135is next to an S5? I think that someone is selling an S5 and buying a 135is, and people asked that person to write a post comparing the two drives from a personal level. I think personal impressions are fun to read in such instances as people constantly have changing circumstances, changing needs and switch between cars that would normally not be cross shopped or reviewed next to each other in a professional review.

I just traded my M3 for a 135is last week. Two quite different cars. But worth comparing the two.

By the way, I'll bet that M3 is a blast on the country roads in Scotland.

while the review speaks positively for the 135is, i feel like the article is more of a statement of how BMW is slowly "losing its roots" in the compact RWD premium segment.

Yeah it's great fun thanks especially when it's dry it's a monster as you know. That's why I asked in the first place just wanted to know why he asked how it compares to a S5 I love comparing cars too I did not mean to sound a bit of a dick, just wanted to know as they are so different. How do you like your 135? Do you miss your m3? Thanks.

I certainly wasn't accusing you of being a dick. Not in the least.

I find the question interesting, as I spent 6-8 weeks searching for alternatives to the M3. I wanted to downsize in costs, yet still have something that had power, performance and handling, and retained some premium feel. It was tough to find anything that satisfied my wants. 135is was a good compromise, in my opinion, and as I have it, I'm realizing that it really is a great little car.

I miss the M3 a little. More from the standpoint of ego I suppose. I live in the city, though, and don't have fantastic roads to play on like you do, unless I drive an hour out of the city.

The article does highlight the undercurrent of uncertainty with the future of the brand. I found it interesting how the writer implied it was the "Germans, as a car-making culture, [falling] out of love with driving" as the reason for BMW's numbing of the 3-Series design. If that's true, then how would that NOT affect all future models?

I hope future 1 and 2-Series models live up to our expectations as enthusiasts. Porsche keeps calling to me like a siren in the mist !

Absolutely - I feel its a "last call" for driver's BMWs if one is interested in a new car.

Previously I planned on waiting for the M235i, but driving an e82 back to back with an F30 and e90 frightened me. I couldn't believe it, so I drove a few more F30s and got the same feeling - the car just didn't speak to me at all.

I absolutely hate that they are doing that. When I first saw it in the f30 a while back, I knew there was change coming to BMW brand. What the hell is this a frkn Kia? The key differentiators in our cars are slowly going away I think. I have an 07 now. My next one will be a late model, low mileage e9x. Can't do the steering wheel thing. Sorry, I am that weird.

I personally think my 09 135i m-sport is the most ideal 1 series. Better looking mirrors, ash tray cover, better standard stereo (over 2010), the N54 engine... I also added the BMW PE, SSK, M3 FSB, performance grills & pedals. As close to stock perfection for a 1 series IMO. Btw the msport steering wheel in the f30 is even better / thicker than ours.

I don't get the bitching over the new cruise system. The buttons are *easily* large enough to operate by feel. I never look down at the steering wheel to engage the cruise control, and I use the thing all the time to maximize fuel economy in our X3. I have a 135i as well, so I regularly switch between the systems.

The only thing that annoys me about the X3 is that you have to turn the cruise "on". IMO, they could turn the on/off button in to a cancel button and have the system always available, but I think the concern is that you'll bump the rocker switch and accidentally engage the cruise control.

I can definitely say, BMW watches their fan base closely. Ask me how I know...
I'm an optimist at heart, so I'd like to believe this is true, but two truths strike me:

1) I don't consider the 1 to be a niche vehicle, I just think it sells poorly in the U.S. because it's priced so close to the 3, it's not practical for many people and the styling doesn't appeal to some people. But the bigger point is that the E9X shares most of the driving characteristics of the E8X, only a bit bigger and heavier -- they're not worlds apart.

In the time I've owned my 335i, I've had two E90 loaners during service and one F30. All were configured bare bones which gave me a fair opportunity to compare them at their roots. Even a stripped E90 sedan was fun to me. Aside from the 6-speed automatic transmission being a poor match for the N52, the car had that spark. The steering was responsive and firm, the suspension, though a bit softer than I would prefer in the stripped model, was balanced and compliant, and the chassis would dance a bit when tossed about. And without all the tech and eco crap, I could entirely focus on the drive. The F30 is a completely different animal -- I feel like a passenger in the driver's seat when I drive one. To put it bluntly, it's simply no fun -- BMW's mainstream, top selling model that's had a target on its back by the whole auto industry for 30 years is no longer any fun to me. That is not a good sign for the future.

2) There's a very strong likelihood that the new 2 will essentially represent a cut down F30 just as the E8X represents a cut down E9X. If that's the case, I simply don't see how the 2 Series will retain the spark of the current 1. It will almost certainly have electric steering, I'd bet the chassis will feel softer and duller just like the F30 and, for those of us who prefer naturally aspirated engines, there are no options.

I fully understand why BMW, in their quest to diversify and spread the brand across every niche, is leaving me on the beach and I accept that reality. I expect the problem (from my perspective) to get worse before it gets better. So I'll enjoy my 1 while it lasts and hope that someone else fills the void that I believe BMW is leaving in the marketplace.

The 135is comes with DCT, which hasn't been available on the US market 135i for quite some time. That would make it very expensive to turn a 135i in to an "is". The sport auto in the 135i is good, but it's no dual-clutch gearbox. The DCT can't be matched for predictability and latency, and that's what really matters for sporty driving.

EDIT: I'm an idiot and you shouldn't listen to me.

You are saying I am bitching but talking about your own annoyances. That's all I am doing. Maybe, don't know but, if you used your cruise 80% of your driving then you may understand. We live in the sticks. Settle down.
