I'm confused

If you have a warranty there shouldn't be any type of fee involved, maybe a $50 deductible but that should be it. As far as a diagnostic fee it can vary from dealer to dealer, seeing you're in the SoCal area which is notorious for services price gouging I would prepare for at least a $300 raping.

My car is under warranty but last time I heard it was like $175, however they'll waived it if you agree to repairs there. My suggestion is to find a good indy i bet there are many good ones in SoCal.

If the sound is subtle, you might be hearing the normal noise from the stock DMFW that comes in your car. Took me some time to get used to it as well. I bet the SA you tell the problem to at BMW will say the same thing. If you're under warranty and there actually is an issue, the diagnostic fee should be included I would imagine. At least that's how it was on my CPO 535i I had a few years ago.
