Normal auto through 2010. 2011 and later get DCT. Other major changes in 2011 were switch to N55 engine (harder to tune) and constant rate springs that reduce, but do not eliminate under steer.

Maybe I can add another ignorant question here, since I can't make a topic of my own yet.
I just got a 2011 135i with DCT. I used to have a Z4 with SMG. With the SMG, the clutch never engaged until I hit the gas. With the DCT, as soon as I let go of the break, the car starts moving, both in 1st and reverse. Is this expected behavior? So if I gradually release the break and nudge forward, my clutch is slipping? Isn't this a bit of useless wear? Thanks for any info! |

That's because the M3 engine doesn't have sufficient torque at idle revs to move the car, whereas the 135 does

At first I didn't like this, but it has proved very useful, particularly when my less car savvy boyfriend goes to drive. |

Nnnnope. Remember that peak torque is not off idle torque.

I would argue that you dont have that much torque at idle. the torque curve will be steep until you reach the torque band then it will taper off quickly. The torque band however on the 135 is almost at red line. I havent measured it but judging by experience i suspect that you may be about half that amout of torque at idle or less.
