Probably where the adaptor cable comes in too.

You would think so right!? But that is not what my dealer told me as I posted before (#51 in this thread!). THEY said you need a new footwel module AND coding for cars built before 09/09.

Like I have said before... we don't really know until someone steps up and orders the new tails and installs them! I think it would probably work (installing LEDs on a LED tail equiped e82) - but you never know when it comes to BMW's.

So... who else is brave like Herr HZ.

although its very tempting mod, I can't justify spend $400 for a taillight.

Yea... I hear you. But has anyone even asked a US dealer what the price is just for the rear lights? IF they are 116 euros each over here... I bet they are just above $140 in the states. Maybe less. ?

I've tried. Not in the system yet at my dealers.

Hi everyone,

it's a little bit curious about the new tail lights.
My cardealer (I've a very good relationship with it) can't answer all details. He ordered the adaptor for me, be cause in the ETK you must order it, when you have a car after 09/09. The meaning of the booth y-cables (see my posting before) he doesn't know.

There ist only one hint in the dealer's ISIS (computer for coding and progamming cars). When the dealer connect your car with the ISIS, there is a menu item "retrofit LCI Tail Lights".
If the dealer choose it your car get all the new software and it takes a long of time (approx. 2 hours). We canceled it, be cause I can't imagine it's neccessary for two new tail lights.
I expect this menu item is for cars before 09/09 and you must code it due to the new FRM.

In conclusion the dealer wrote a message in the PUMA-System (BMW internal messaging board for product support), but up to now we couldn't get an answer.
So BMW offer the retrofit of the tail lights but don't really know all details...

So folks - be brave and try it It doesn't hurt

Have a nice day!
Phil

@Dackel I'll try to come to Munich. You must know it's a trip about 600 km one way.

I think that is the only way for all of us to really know. Because some say you don't while BMW says you do. ? And why do they provide adaptor cables when HZ did not even need to use those!>?

Thanks for the info Phil. Yes, we need some brave folks around here!

Phil you need to post a few more times (you need to have five posts) so I can send you a PM(private message) with some info on the Welt tour event.

Hi,

I've some new information about the tail lights.
At first - I couldn't get a answer from BMW. It's bad

But I discovered the fact that the LCI and preLCI tail lights have the same interieur. The bulb socket are the same - same partnumber:
63 21 7 164 971 left
63 21 7 164 972 right

Now, I don't really know why BMW offer the adaptor cable!?
It's mysterious

I'll inform you, when I get an answer from BMW.

Greetings
Phil

Hi,

I've got an answer from BMW:
In my case I need neither an adaptor cable nor coding.
But this fact I knew before....

So I asked again the product management and I'm awaiting the answer.

I'll inform you as soon as possible.

Greetings
Phil

My build date is post 09/09 so I should be able to plug an play right?

BTW mine should be in late next week and they weren't expensive by any means.

09/09 is the cut off.

You should check with a BMW dealer because your car could have been built before BMW changed over to the later (wiring) design of the tail lamps. I don't think you will really know until you give it a try.

Hopefully your car was built late in the month of September. I know you can hold in the trip reset button (per my DIY on resetting service due lights) and see your exact build date. That might put your mind at ease. But again we/you will not know for sure until you plug the new tails in and see what happens.

Good Luck,
Dackel

POST(meaning after) 09/09 not IN 09/09. My car hit the US late May of 2010 so I'm sure I'm fine. My guess is anything with an N55 under the hood in the USA is built after 09/09.

Sorry I missed that one little word: post

I think all N55's were built mainly from March/2010 onwards.

Although according to RealOEM.com there were limited numbers of N55's built in the few months before March. My guess is for press cars.

Agreed. So we will see. I shouldn't need any coding right? PnP?

If I need coding I'll have to go to a shop I know that can do it, but would rather not if I don't need it.
