Run-flats recommendations 135i

Hello. I need to get some new tires on my 135I limited Edition. The car has Bridgestone Potenza on it now but I was hopping to find a quieter, less jarring replacement. The dealer has the Pirelli P Zero's and Dunlop SP1 available. Any recommendation as to which can provide a more comfortable ride for city driving with really bad roads? Thank you!

Is there a particular reason you are wanting a run-flat tire specifically?

I do a lot of road tripping and don't want to be stuck without a spare tire. Although all my flats happened in the city but I guess its just the peace of mind. If I were to go with regular tire, what would you recommend?

I can see how a run-flat would theoretically seem more practical, but with their driving characteristics I would rather take a small "risk" with a traditional tire.

You did mention wanting a more compliant ride, and a good summer tire will definitely ride smoother than a run-flat. I think a lot of people would recommend the go-to Michelin PSS/PS4S. Depending on your budget, there are more value-oriented summer tires that are also well-reviewed. Just depends on your application and budget.

I recommend switching to Michelin PSS or AS/3 and put a can of fix a flat in the trunk. Also add AAA just in case.

Go the The Tire Rack site; my guess is you're looking for Grand Touring All Season.

the pirelli p7 run flats are quiet so far for me after 1000 miles. more of a touring summer tire than a performance one, which seems to suit your road tripping habits.
I do 25K miles a year mostly highway. I like the peace of mind of run flats. plus it's a myth that they are not repairable.

If you're dead set on running RFTs, consider the Michelin Pilot Sport ZP or some variation of the Bridgestone DriveGuard.

Otherwise, join the cool kids, see the light and ditch the RFTs and their rock-hard side walls. I'm a big fan of Michelin, but there are other excellent choices for less money on the market as well from Continental, Firestone, etc.

I installed P7s last weekend. They are much quieter than the P-Zeros they replaced.

The P7s were squirmy for the first few days, but after a little more than a week they are working well. I think that the rolling resistance is lower because I am getting about 1 MPG better than with the P-Zeros, and about the same MPG that I get with the X-Ice winter tires.

Ok. I pulled the trigger and replace the rock BMW call tires with the Michelin Pilot Sport. Man, what a huge difference, It's enjoyable to drive in the city again! Why did I ever went on for 5 years with run-flats? I feel like my car probably had some premature structural fatigue due to the rigid nature of the run-flats. As a matter of fact, just last week I had to take my car in for some popping, cracking sounds from the steering. It ended up being a loose bolt on the steering system. The mechanic claims its common with a convertible but I think the hard tires definitely contributed as the car only has 30k miles. I just want to thank everyone for convincing me to replace the run-flats! Now for the next question. What does everyone use for an emergency? I read that slim repair kits can damage the pressure sensor. Anyone out there who had flats before have any inputs as to if that is true? Thank you again!

Avoid any kind of slime. It is hard on the rims and sensors. Get a small compressor and a plug kit and learn how to use it. Like this (MC but the same): http://jvbproductions.com/Tire_Plugging.html

Ditching the run flats was the best mod yet.

I was told to avoid "fix a flat" at all costs.

Do you switch wheels out for the winter?
I use a 17" square setup (141 style wheels) for my winter tires and often in the summer I will just keep one of my winter wheels in the trunk in case of a flat (I run runflats in the winter, but performance summers the other half of the year).

I didn't see it noted here but my rft's got very noisy when they reached about ½ worn. Getting rid of them was best mod I ever did (well equal to BMW P exhaust). Now, if I have to go long distance I carry 1 of my track tires on rim ready to go. Got a suitable new jack from a junk yard, also carry a ½ inch drive power bar and 17mm deep socket.
