E90 performance in Wheels COTY

The E90 got through to the semi-final round of vehicles, but not the final round. It was discriminated against mainly due to the run-flat tyres and price in Australia compared to the IS250, which got through to the final round.

FYI the Mazda MX-5 won Wheels COTY for 2005 due to value for money. I expect the next edition of the magazine will be full of enraged letters in relation to the Mazda's win...

I have attached the write ups of both the E90 and the IS250

They are obviously more sensible than their Australian counterparts.

Imagine the IS getting through to the last round. With all the new car technology in the new E90 I expected it to at least be a finalist.

If you read the Wheels COTY criteria, equal weighting is given to Function, Technology, Safety, Efficiency and Value for money. One of these is sufficient to pull a car down.

The award goes to the whole range also, not just an individual model of that range. As basically a one model range, the IS250 was at an advantage over the 3 Series because the BMW range covers a wider scope.

BMW got judged to have the best headlights though with a score of 10/10...

I wouldn't worry too much. The European COTY award has gone to some dire vehicles in the past: see list

The Citroën XM in 1990, for example, was a truly appalling car.

I was thinking of taking a Lexus for a spin to see what I missed out on. Now I don't need to. Thanks Jamie.

No probs

The review didn't make me want to rush out and drive one either...

Yeah, it can be funny how things pan out with hindsight.

The thing I like about the Wheels COTY is that they will withhold the award if they don't think any cars make the grade. They have done this several times in the past.

One year they rather controvertially printed a lemon on their cover and stated that no car made the grade. Ford was not happy because they had just released a new car they thought would be a shoe in, and were slapped in the face.
