My friends, the % of loss is not a static figure. It varies with load/rpms per the Dinan Group's N54 doc.

Dinan already pulled the n54 and bench tested the engine. The engine has about 330hp at peak rpm.

Looks like it isn't down on power comared to the 335i, that's right in the ballpark.

Beat me to it.

How do you figure it will put out more power to the FW then it did when bench tested by Dinan?

for reference Turner motorsport uses a Dynapack dyno and their stock 335i got 278.45rwhp and 284.785rwtq so the 135i looks like it will be as good or better. and yes I know conditions have a lot to do with it but the dynapack takes some variables out to begin with(having a direct coupling) I think it is at least safe to say the 135i is not detuned

BMW does like to underrate their cars.

Even so, the N54 is easliy on par with the S54 in terms of peak power output.

True, but doesn't come close to the max torque figures of the N54 though.

This may or may not mean much, if the N54 cannot sustain peak numbers, compared to the S54 though...

What about the 295lb ft of Torque?
Correct me if im wrong,....
If the torque measured 295 lb ft @ the rear Wheels, and 15% is added for Drivetrain Loss, then we are looking at 339.25 lb Ft of torque @ the flywheel?
Wow,...just Wow.

I learned a new term today, "Magazine Racing." good stuff!

Why not add to it although I do hate to bring this thread up again, but for the n00bies on the site and for good reference Automobile Mag dyno'd a couple 335s with some interesting results.

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1180

Their DTL calculation may be off, i don't know, but they did score a higher peak HP at the wheels with their second 335i.

i'm just happy that we can put all this jealousy inspired "135i must be detuned" crap behind us.

zero evidence yet it seemed to take on some life amongst those desperate to rationalize their 335i. :-)

no disrespect to the 335i of course ... just some insecure owners.

here are two diagrams from slk32, member of german forum, who tested his 135i. The results are:
1. 231 KW (315 BHP) @ 5413 tpm and 445 NM (328 Ftlbs) @ 3383 tpm (DIN- measurement)
and

2. 223 KW (303 BHP) @ 5401 tpm and 427 NM (314 Ftlbs) @ 3028 tpm (EWG-measurement)

The engine was 3800 kilometers old (2361 miles).

135i is too powerful for such a small car now. Oh small, must be unsafe as well.

sorry for being stupid but i dont understand alot of these figures - what do they actually all mean? Does it mean that BMW underated the speed/power of the car and it actually has alot more hp and torque than they announced?

cheers

Yes. In general, BMW's always have more HP and Torque than BMW says, and the cars are also faster than the 0-60 times that BMW publishes.

For example, BMW says the 335i goes 0-60 in something like 5.3 seconds, while many magazines have tested that car at 4.8 to 60.

A 280 HP dyno on a claimed 300 crank HP car is excellent. A dyno is taken at the wheels, while the crank is the power coming out of the engine that manufacturers publish. There is always some loss of power from the engine to the wheels, and usually it is alot more than 20 HP. This suggests that BMW slightly underrated this car, which they have been doing to all their cars for a long time now.
