Really want a 135i. Need your opinions please
I've been looking for a 135i coupe for some time now and finally ran across something that I think will fit the bill. I'm looking for people's opinions on whether this CPO seems like a descent car. I'm specifically looking for an automatic.
Some Background Since this is my first relatively new BMW are there things that I should be on the look out for. I'm 38, married with a 4yo in a booster seat. From what I've read she'll be just to finee back there. The wife has a Prius so we take that most of the time when we're all together but we'd take this some as well. In addition, I have a 2006 Toyota Avalon Limited that's been paid off for a while that I'll be trading in on whatever I get. I guess the bottom line is I'm tired of driving a big "old persons" car and want something sporty and fun. Thanks for your time and insight Brian http://www.bmwofcolumbia.com/certifi...1870aa2b29.htm Last edited by BBuff; 11-02-2012 at 06:28 AM.. |

I'm too young for kids so I can't speak there but it certainly ticks all the boxes for fun and performance.
There aren't really many things wrong with this car other than ignition and fuel related issues such as injectors, high pressure fuel pump and coil packs but I don't know a modern car without some sort of weak spot around those areas (certainly Audi are no better). I'd ask to see the recall and warranty history on the car as most of those problems should have been covered already and would be interesting to see what it has had. Other than that the turbocharger wastegates can rattle but that's very audible on deceleration, kind of rattle snake like. Bascially take it for a drive and see what's what, use your ears to listen for abnormal sounds and don't let your heart cloud the judgement of your head (you'll surely love it even if it had faults). Check when the next services are due via the iDrive or OBC to guage future costs. Also take a look at the brakes as these aren't cheap to replace. After all the above has been said though, bare in mind that you'll have CPO warranty and piece of mind for 12mths to get any niggles sorted out. The car is low mileage so potential common component failure as I've mentioned may not have had a chance to happen yet. which you'll praise the warranty for. |

The low mileage is a plus, further, it appears you will have some period of original warranty left.
I've had mine a little less than a month. You will not regret it. I'm guessing you will want a child seat just for the 135 though, access to the back seat is not for the feint of heart. |

Damn, stupidly low mileage on that car. Make them a deal for 29.9k out the door and you have yourself a steal. You won't have any regrets, except maybe not buying the car sooner haha.
Going from an Avalon / Prius to the 135i.... reminds me of myself, going from a stock Civic LX with about 8 horsepower to a 135i with about 400. Be safe driving! |

Agree with what the others have said. With the warranties still in place you should be covered for most issues that may come up. Check the tires, if they are original they should be nearing the end of their useful life, especially the rears.
It will be good to have another 135i in town. If you decide to go for it, consider joining the BMWCCA club. There is an autocross on the 18th at the BMW performance center in Greenville. It's probably too late to register but spectators are welcome and just watching is fun too and it would be a good trip to get used to the car. Speaking of the BMW Performance Center, see if the dealer with throw in a driving experience at the Perfomance Center with the deal. Jason is the GM at BMW of Columbia.

Thanks for all of the replies so far. According to the salesperson, all recall work has been done, but I'll ask for the information in writing.
Thanks Lexington. I've been to the driving school a couple of times. It's so addictive! Do you have a link to more info on the autocross? Do they typically throw in such things? Personally I'd prefer the drop in price but would certainly take both. I should add that an additional goal of mine is to get out of the house and meet new friends. I've been lurking on this site for a while now and know that part of this whole thing will be the easiest. Last edited by BBuff; 11-02-2012 at 08:45 AM.. |

You get an extended warranty with a BMW CPO. Also, there is a great deal on a group buy for maintenance on here if interested but not sure if it is still active.

Very nice car and well optioned it seems. Low miles are a plus. However, I was able to snatch up a 2011 with 6K miles for not much more than that. It had every single option minus nav.

I was about to say the same thing. That is crazy low miles...and you still have warranty if you did have an issue. I would do it....

It is a touch high on the price in my view-I bought my 09 almost one year ago with similar miles and paid a bit less-they did CPO it which adds to the dealer cost. Solid car well optioned. I would ask to see the service records - just to make sure nothing odd is present. Also find out how long it has been out of service - tires can be an issue right around 20-25k - so determine if they gave it new sneakers with the CPO- they should- they are not inexpensive. You should be able to find a 10 or 11 right in that price range with the same features. IMO I would always opt for the M steering wheel and the sport seats.

The car has the original 4/50K warranty until 6/13/2013 and the CPO until 6/13/2015.
Since this is will be my daily driver, I don't want something that is going to be in the shop a lot or something that I've got to keep pouring money in to. This is where my hesitation lies. |

Other than tires it will all be covered until 2015 right down to the wiper blades (clutch is also excluded-but doubtless you would need to track it to wear it out.) So I would not expect that you would pour much more than gas into the car. I have owned a number of CPOed BMWs and been very pleased. Assuming they gave it new rubber in the CPO you should get at least 2 years on the tires-unless you drive crazy miles. I have had only two minor items with the 09 - side marker light seal was bad and the rear brake light cracked - common - just search the threads - all under warranty. So you would be buying 2.5 years of warranty and maintainance with the car. After that it is all on you. So what does it cost to deal with a 6 year old BMW. Well that can be a bit expensive, or not- it really depends on so many factors. An 09 just sold for 29k near me. It was not CPOed and had low miles. The extra $$ you pay is going right to the dealer to cover his CPO costs. What I have seen is that many dealers will not CPO the 1s as it does not add very much to the margin on the car at resale. The few dollars on warranty and service generally does not help in the short term.

Thanks for the thorough reply CP. Maintenance isn't included in the CPO, is it? I thought it was warranty only with a $50 deductible per occurrence.

Nice car, besides the slush box tranny, but if thats what you want then get it! I picked up my 2008 6mt two weeks ago and love it. Mine has premium, cold weather, sport, two sets of wheels and tires with 37k miles and I paid $27k, but it isn't a CPO'd car. My 7 year old son, who is tall for his age, fits just fine in the back seat. Only problem I had is most car seats don't fit the rear bucket seats very well. I went and bought a cheap booster at Target that has a "V" shape to the bottom and was advertised as fitting modern bucket seats. Works like a charm.
Great cars and they can be pumped up to close to 400hp reliably for pretty cheap too! |

Thanks for the booster advice. I think the one in the Prius will work. They're going to let me take the car all weekend to see how it's going to work out.
Thanks again to everyone for taking their time to respond and passing on their encouragement. |

I just picked my 2011 135i DCT + NAV up Friday with 28,088 miles on the odometer. I'm completely in love with it. I sold my B5 Audi S4 for it. I'm 23 so I don't have kids to worry about for a while (I hope) but I could see a potential issue in fitting a kid in the back. I too wanted something more sporty and fun, and this car fits the ticket perfectly! Good luck man!
