Kansas City Divisional Autocross Video
Took the BMW down to the KC Midwest Divisional Autocross last weekend. The event was held at a truck driving school. Course was a lot of fun, kind of like a mini road course with some slaloms thrown in. Was a bit challenging as there were some transitions from grippy concrete to not so grippy asphalt. Actually matched one of the EVOs best times in STU on the 2nd day, but I hit a cone.

Looks fun! How are the star specs holding up for you? And did you ever autocross it with the stock sized rims/tires to have a feel for how much the extra width was worth?
PS - I hate you for having that Quaife, you lucky SOB. ;-)

Star Specs are holding up well. I like them alot. I did do a couple events on stock tires/rims and then last year I squared up the wheels to 8.5" front and rear with 235x35x18/255x35x18 Bridgestone RE-01Rs on stock suspension (+ Hotchkis sway bar) and was an amazing difference. Car was alot more neutral, less pushy.
\ For reference, with just those changes I was able to beat a really good driver (who would beat me by 2 seconds in my own car) who was driving another person's 135i on stock rim sizes (upgraded tires) + JuiceBox + coilovers + intake + exhaust. Unfortunately squaring up the rim sizes knocks you out of Stock class into STU, which made for a very long season of getting my a** handed to me... But was good seat time, learned a lot before modding the car, made me a better driver.... So back to topic... In short, the added width does a lot for grip and balance.

Thanks for posting! I love seeing the totally different course setups around the country. I'm surprised I didn't see agricultural tire marks all over the place. It looks like that place limits what you can do, but allows for many course configurations. I'm used to C130 width runways.
Nice run! |

Yah that place is primarily a truck driving school. I think the police also use it for training for pursuites. That was my first trip to that site. Definitely limited to what you can do, pretty much follow the road around in different configurations and put in a slalom here or there...
This event had 140 drivers and 4 runs one day and 3 runs the 2nd day. It was a divisional event so you get people from the entire region. Probably a few more people then you would have at a normal event.

That's one of the reasons why I don't like SCCA events. Not enough seat time for the time investment.
At my BMW CCA Chapter events, we get 8 runs i n one day, ~100 drivers, ~75-90 sec course (FTD between 70 and 80 seconds). Last event, we finished by 3pm, all packed and outta there... although that was a record. We normally finish around 4pm... then go beering. |

4-5 runs is pretty standard at our local SCCA events.. we don't get started til 11 most of the time... which is part of the issue. If we could get started earlier getting 6-8 runs in wouldn't be an issue.

Yeah the divisional type events will usually only be 3 or 4 runs due to the crowds. We typically do 6+ runs and allow people to double enter their cars for extra cash. We've been pretty successful with this format for the past year, but it involves the board members getting there early and busting our ass. Typical turnout for us is 75-80 drivers. |
