Autocross on factory run flats?

Hi Guys,

I did some searching but didn't find anything, so here it is.

I'm a new 135i owner. Have a decent amount of AutoX experience with a FD RX7. With the RX7 sold, I'm looking to get some seat time in my 135i. I have the factory run flats on the 135i now and am considering several AutoX events this spring and summer to get a good feel of the car. Has anyone AutoX'd with the factory run flats? With all the issues with the infamous run flats, I'm a little concerned.

Thanks! George

i don't think there's anything to worry about really. The Star Specs were faster once they scrubbed in a bit. The turn-in on the bridgestones was pretty good, but the overall grip wasn't the best, but honestly was better than most oem out there. The grip limit will help get the car where it really wants to be. Slow is fast and all, but REALLY with this car. there's a point of body roll where the car is just a plow. these tires might get you to slow down well enough for some manuevers that a better tire would then really really benefit now.

Stock RFT were actually really good in terms of dry grip and it was really hard to roll them over. Only downside is the narrow footprint upfront.

Grip isn't half bad, but the RFTs have issues with heat dissipation. I've seen a lot of them (mine included) that start to severely deteriorate after a handful of runs. They begin to shed material like crazy.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

I ran my first HPDE on the RFTs and had no issues at all, just watch the tire pressures.

They won't grip like a good set of non-RFTs, but they should be OK.

Thanks for the great feeback guys! My plan is to run the RFTs to shreds and get a spare set of wheels and tires for the winter. Next Spring, probably some star specs... they are awesome!

Stock RFT's

I just ran my 1st Autocross in my 135i on stock RFT's I just started at 50psi and they did good, no rolling issues at all, They spin easy and you don't even hear any screatching, so not even trying to grip, For stock they are decent, I was surprised I took 1st in DS 1st time racing the 135i 100% stock setup. Fun Car!!

Yeah, 50psi did great for me. Was a 2nd gear track pretty much, few areas top of 2nd. Good luck!

So it's totally doable. Initial turn in response is really good, but you won't hold any corners. Slow is not fast, it's slow. Use the autox to practice drifting!

Bumping this old thread. Is it better to run stock psi's, 40psi's all around or 50 psi's all around? Last autox event I was on stock psi's.

Thanks, completely forgot about that. Shoe polish is another option.

Nope, they're gonna blow up for sure. People bash the RFT's too much. In terms of performance, they really aren't too much worse than the hot street tires from a few years ago. I autox'd my 1'er when it was showroom stock, and it was fine. However, I get the feeling that they would not take well to aggressive track driving.
