Need Help with Pioneer Head unit install (no Audio)

So I've been working on installing a New Pioneer AVH-5600BT headunit into my 09 135i. I am using this install kit Radio Install Kit Everything works perfectly except for one minor detail... I get no AUDIO!! I know I'm getting antenna signal so thats not it. Any idea's? I've double triple and quadruple checked all the wiring so I'm all out of ideas.

What audio system do you have? Some of these sets only works with the base stereo.

did you use the factory harness? have you double checked the pinouts?

I know it wasn't until I found a thread on e90post with the pinouts that I was able to install the headunit properly along with a secondary cable to keep the HU from reseting :\

I believe I have the "top Hi-Fi" OEM option or "logic 7" even though it wasn't called that for the 09 MY. The radio has the option for surround in the menu 10 speaker setup including the 2 subs under the seats. I guess I'll check the wiring and the pin outs on the harness of the install kit again. After some more searching last night I think my problem is that the amp isn't getting a signal to turn on hence no sound. I just don't know how to correct that without spending $$$ more to install an aftermarket amp and new wiring to the speakers.

I don't think it's possible to use this kit with the stereo you have. You have fiber optic cables for amp signal now, and this kit probably won't support that. Kits like this is usual for cars with the (euro) base stereo.

well using the kit i can get everything on the head unit to work even the steering wheel controls. the only thing i don't get is sound. Does this mean my only option is installing an aftermarket AMP to work around the Optical wires?

Yes, everything else will work, but as long as you don't use the fiber connections, you'll never get any sound.

Yes, or retrofit iDrive if you want a bigger screen.

Garage List
Top Hi-Fi/Logic 7/Harmon Kardon uses the MOST Bus (Fibre Optic) from the OEM Head Unit to the Logic 7 Amplifier in the left rear quarter panel.

From that amp onwards it is standard copper analog cabling.

Your best option is to remove that Amp and re-wire all of the speakers to a new Amp or direct to the new Head Unit.

Thats what i thought. I think thats the best way to go here. Time to look for a quality 6 channel amp and a wiring diagram for this top hi-fi system.

Just had a thought. If i were to Relocate my OEM headunit to the trunk, would i then be able to get sound from the after market HU? Would a setup as i illustrate in the pic below work? Is the sound transmitted my the CAN High/Low wires then sent to be proccessed by the amp through the Optical cables? Im just trying to get a better understanding of how the signal goes from the Aftermarket HU to the OEM HU then out to the amp and speakers.

Im just thinking there HAS to be a way to do this without going through the trouble or instaling an aftermarlet amp. All i really want an aftermarket HU for is Blutooth/Navi & other APP support not "better sound" or more power...

I have been researching this all day and i am now 99.9% certain that changing the HU on a L7 system is not possible without bypassing it all together. So that being said, here is the new plan... (See attached schematic)

Can some one confirm that this setup is possible? Specifically the part where I would use a Harness made by board member Technic to hack into the individual speaker wiring instead of cutting into the OEM harness... I am assuming his harness matches the OEM speaker wiring loom so that i could just connect one end to the OEM AMP connector then cut off the other end and splice into all the speaker wires i need from there.

If this is a viable option then i will be ordering everything i need ASAP to get this done.

I'm bot familiar with the components you are using, but it seems good.

Feel free to send me your old amp.

It looks like that schematic should work fine. Yes, you can relocate the HU. This is pretty common if you want to put a double din unit up front but retain the functions provided by the stock unit.

The only reason I still have the stock radio in my 1 is because of this exact issue - it's a massive pain in the ass to relocate everything.

So I got everything wired up and I have sound!!! The OEM Logic 7 speakers and subs sound great with the JL XD600 powering them up. Still need to do some fine tuning but it sounds very crisp. On a side note, in the process of wiring the amp to the positive battery terminal my wrench hit the ground terminal and sparked. Ever since that happened my airbag light came on... Anybody experience this before? Is it normal? I've never had that happen on a car before with it resulting in an srs light.

Interesting thread but I would start with just trying to clear the code. Sparking could have just convinced the car something was wrong. It isn't still sparking so the code may clear without any extraordinary effort.

Yea I'm going to try to get it cleared first. I'm sure the dealership will want crazy $$$ so I'm going to look around locally to see if any independent shop is able to do it... Question, replacing the factory headunit will not affect the ability to read the car's OBD or clear codes correct? It only affects the ability to update/flash the car's computer??

Sorry about the crappy pics it's all i've got right now... The trim kit is pretty darn good. Be forewarned much like others have stated in order to get a radio this size to fit i had to do some SERIOUS trimming in the dash. (try to ignore the finger prints all over the place i took these right after i finished the install)
