Have Your Wastegates Rattled?

Hey everyone....

Just doing a little research here on the infamous wastegate rattle.

Have you had you turbos replaced due to the wastegates rattling?
Either way list your info.....

Model Year?
Mileage?
Mods? (engine related)

Additionally....if you suffered the rattle but DID NOT replace them...what did you do to fix it?

I think no rattles. Same turbos.

From reading, it is supposed to sound like holding a card to a spinning bicycle wheel? Any body with links to vid of such?

I personally don't, but I know my front wheels were making a clicking sound that sounds EXACTLY like the card in bicycle spokes thing a while ago and it was definitely from the wheels, tires, or suspension. It would only happen on turns. It went away when I put my winter wheels on, and I have changed my summer rims and tires since then and it hasn't come back. Also, the regular DI ticking can sometimes be confused with this. I just don't want people to start pulling their hair out over sounds that might not actually be the wastegate.

Full Bolt On. You have pretty much all the bolt-on mods that you can have for the car. Intake, full exhaust with downpipes, FMIC, etc.

I had a nasty rattle. I mean nasty. I spend the past 2 days adjusting my actuating arm and finally got my rattle to stop!! But my wastegate (rear turbo) is sloppy as a whore. Im starting to decide/stack cash for a turbo replacement in the near future...

2008 N54 with about 58k miles (tune, intercooler and downpipes)

Ever since I bought the car with CPO coverage, I have always heard a rattle upon start up so I figured this is normal to me. It did become more apparent when I put in a set of catless downpipes, but it only happens on start up for like a second and goes away and it never happens again. It only does it on cold start ups, so it honestly doesn't bother me if this is wastegate rattle.

Thanks for all the replies....

Those of you that "think" you might have it....dont.
Ive heard it...its nasty sounding.
Each time you let off the accelerator the noise is obvious and loud.

Reason for me starting this thread....
My warranty will expire on 5/18/12 and I'm debating on extending it or not.

Lets keep this going!

If you don't extend at least take it in and request they take a look at it. I told my SA I thought my turbos might be going from reading on here. They said they would look but acted like I didn't know what I was talking about. After looking they called and apologized for not believing me and are replacing them tomo.

I told them that there was a rattle on startup and during deceleration that sounded like a card in the spoke of a bike coming from the downpipe turbo area.

I'm now scared the rattle will start after replying to this thread, lol.

FBO!

I've heard a rattle at idle. And when revved in neutral or with clutch pushed in.
But the sound is gone when I give it some gas in gear and get in it.

Any other n55's have this?

Well a few weeks back I told them I could begin to here a rattle on start up.
They confirmed and replaced my wastegate actuators, and now since I have documentation of the issue before the warranty expired they will continue to fix the issue now that I'm out of warranty.

Also I found some documentation on how the turbos have an additional 1 year 12,000 mile warranty.
This goes along with the fuel pump class action suit.
