Window Dropped Out of Sight !!!

Yesterday I closed the drivers side door of my 08 vert. Lots of noise bangs etc and the window literally fell into the door.
Won't raise with switch.

Dealer says new window regulator needed. Ordered hopefully will be here tomorrow.

Fingers crossed it doesn't rain.

Jeez, seriously? I drove a 1996 318ti for a while with the same problem. A trip to the forums taught me that window regulators were prone to failure on the E36. Hard to believe that BMW still hasn't figured them out. Good luck with the fix.

Maybe they just don't care?
Same with the cooling systems I keep reading.

Fell off the track. My 95' 318i did the same thing back in the day.

Same here (owned a '96 ti Sport for 14 years). Window regulators were also a problem in the E46 (had a couple).

I haven't heard about it E90 (but haven't looked) and also hoped it was fixed with the E82.

Didn't get fixed in the E46 either. My 323i has had 3 of 4 regulators replaced. Each of them failed in the same way you described. It was fine until all of a sudden the window just drops into the door. The little Teflon wheels on the lower end of the regulators all came apart which caused the cables to let go.

Reminds me of the dreaded regulator failures that plagued nearly every MKIV GTI.
You knew they were gonna go, you just didn't know when...ugh.

Happened to my buddy's E36. Funny that it happened to your vert. I haven't heard many of these issues so it might be just bad luck?

Me and lots of people I know have had this happen in all kinds of cars (even Japanese ones).
Problem is even in a cheap car it was like $700 fix I couldn't imagine what the BMW dealer gets for a repair like that.
I agree you would think car makers (not just BMW) would be able to make a window regulator that doesn't crap out after a few years.

This happened to me yesterday. Took it to the dealer today and I think they said its going to be $510, still waiting to get the car back today. It sucks, I just bought the car 2 weeks ago, but it's out of warranty. I thought about doing it myself but I'd rather have them do it so when/if it fails again I can bitch at them.

$400 to $500 is what I paid for my E46 years ago at an indy shop, so $510 from the dealer is not bad.

That said, it totally sucks that it happened and especially after just buying the car.

Every single BMW has window regulator problems. Replaced them personally on E46s, E36s, and E39s. The coupes tend to do a little better as they are used daily, and tend not to get the dirt resistance buildup that their sedan counterparts can suffer from.

Seems like you can save a bunch of money if you are handy. I googled and a new regulator, admittedly without the motor, is well under $100. There are numerous videos of how to do the replacement - but none I saw was for a 1 series. It still seems quite do-able. To save several hundred dollars I would at least give it a try.

Known issues with BMW's. Nylon gears wear out. Frankly it's a fairly easy fix. I've done it twice and in both cases purchased regulators from salvage yard at fraction of cost.

Couple hours DIY and done.

This just happened to me today. Closed passenger door and window slid right down. Makes a clicking sound when I try to raise it and window won't budge. Anyone know of a DIY or video for replacing the regulator?

If you just google "bmw window regulator" you can get lots of information. Here's a video, for instance:

I did not notice anything for the 1 series but our cars are closely related to the 3 series. It might be a little different but should be similar. I would watch the 3 process, maybe watch the bavarian soundwerks speaker replacement video for how to get the door panels off, and jump in.
