Paint protection...the stuff the dealer tries to sell you?
Is it any good in comparison to the over-the-counter sealants like Opti-seal etc? Or is it all snake oil? I have a friend that put in on her car and I just tested it by removing a bird poop and it seemed to have worked! Whereas if I get a poop on my opti-sealed, collinited jet black 135 it still etches the clear!!
Whats goin on? |

I can't comment on what products are used on the BMW dealerships in your area however when I have done dealership work I have noticed that the quality of materials used were lacking in quality. On the other side of things I did notice this one bmw that I detailed that was still sheeting water long after being purchased. Maybe they had a third party detail the new bmw but I'd like to think that particular dealership had a detail minded Owner
Also several other variables need to be considered like how hot was it that day when the bird pooped? How long was it on the vehicle until it was addressed? also did you have sufficient coverage in terms of your sealant (optiseal, collinite, jetseal)? Alex, when applying your sealant like opti seal do you spray and wipe down one layer? |

Thanks for the reply. With the optiseal I usually spray onto the pad and wipe on just one layer. I wait for it to dry for maybe 15 min then I wipe any excess off the paint.

I remember this pitch when buying my car. I told the bmw guy I was a detail nut, then he said I don't need this. BMW guy said if I take care of my car, and use wax its similar to having this $9999999 BMW paint protection stuff sprayed/wiped/smeared on my whip.

I wouldn't bother with it. If you want true paint protection, have a 'clear bra' (paint protection film) installed (esp. on the hood/front bumper).

I read an article about one called Diamond coat. It was the "once in a car's lifetime" paint protection so you didn't ever have to wax the paint. I guess an ex-employee of Diamond coat said it was just a good quality paint sealant. They would do a good machine polish of the paint and then apply their brand of paint sealant. 5 or 10 years ago paint sealants weren't very common. Now you can get them from most companies so Diamond coat is a thing of the past I think.

I actually bought the Paint Protection and Leather Protection for my AW 135i. So far so good but it's too early to tell. A condition of upholding the warranty they provide for the paint protection is that I must purchase the car wash from them. For my car the paint protection was actually outsourced to Six Star Solutions and I had to purchase the car shampoo through one of their outlets. Here's their website: http://www.sixstarsolutions.com.au/S....Web/Home.aspx

I bought it on mine in jul of last year, last 3mo has been outdoor unfortunately, but the paint is in bad need of a polish... I dont think anything is going to last forever... you'd probalby be better off paying somone for a nice polish job.

The Dealer calls it ADP..Additional Dealer Profit. Best to do it yourself with Adams or Griots sealants and waxes. Best to apply a good sealant, and then a coat of wax over it. Twice a year is plenty.

Dealer Paint Protection = pure profit and BS.
Don't let them suck you in. Any good detailer can do it at a fraction of the cost. When you apply sealant or wax, 90-95% of the finish and how long it will last depends upon the preparation. ie ALL contaminants must be removed. The shortened version is wash/clay bar/machine polish/cleaner fluid - to prep the surface for correct bonding of wax/sealant/ then LSP (last stage product ie wax/sealant). No wax or sealant is going to last longer than 6 months , wax will be more like 3 months. Once you have done the correct initial preparation then every month or so a top up of the sealant or wax is ok without having to go through all the steps again unless it is obvious the paintwork looks dull/contaminated. |

Never understood the appeal of sealants. I have always used a good high quality carnauba wax, such as Mother's California Gold and now P21S 100% and never had a problem with my car's paint, even when I did not have a garage. You just need to wash at least once a week and wax every couple of months (clay bar and polish once a year). I may be nuts, but I enjoy taking care of my car.

I think the ones that Brisbane BMW used is the diamond coat protection.
Doese anyone know where can i find more info on this stuff. I have protection on my car and the stealship told me to just re-apply a paint protection revivor every 6 month. Mind u, i think it does its job and my 5 year old X5 still looks like new. Then again, im not a hardcore detailing pro. Just want to know wheather waxing and polish will buff off the paint protection. Cheers

Now, when I sold my Mazda 3 - had it for 2 years - no protection, never waxed. It still looks like new after I wash it. On closer inspection, there ain't too much swirls, but it's there. Clear coat does amazing things.

I guess if u wash ur car quite regularly, u will end up with swirl marks. That is way im thinking about buff the swirl marks out but not sure what effect it will have on paint protection.

I have used a good polish to remove the etching of the clear and then used this product to seal any scratched areas. Will also take out swirl marks.
