No oil dipstick has me nervous to add more oil
I have been too busy working to do the extra oil change in between the recommended OCI. I will only do it myself or bring it to BMW because I don't know what these oil change places are using. The car says it has another 3500 miles until the next oil change. The yellow light came on to add 1 quart. I did so. Drove another 5 miles and rechecked. It still says low add another quart. Not sure why it wouldn't say add 2 to begin with or why the light just came on if it really needed 2 instead of 1. Do these cars ever have faulty oil sensors? Is there any harm in adding another quart? I miss the dipstick!

I would drive a few more miles before adding any more oil. Sometimes I've seen it takes a little while to reset. Try driving a good 10-15 miles and see if it resets. If not, you could add 1/4 to 1/2 a quart, then check again.
I agree about the dipstick. Sucks we don't have one. |

Doing lots of short trips adds a lot of moister in the oil. This has been known to throw off the oil level sensor. I would drive the car 30 minutes and then see what the oil level says.

don't forget that bmw has revised their ridiculous long oil change intervals, from 15K miles to every 10K miles or once a year. Be sure to adhere to this OCI or even change your oil sooner. The best oil is fresh oil.

Thanks for the tips! Drove it 30 minutes and the oil reading changed to 3/4 full.

+1. That's the only way I get a proper reading as well.

You might want to remove the belly pan bc it can hide/hold any dripping oil. I remember seeing some pics of the guys who had leaking a rear crankshaft seal - most of the oil was on the inside of the belly pan. FYI.

Thank you for the heads up. My one year is 4/20/14 with just 9300 miles. I just called the dealer and scheduled the service. He said the 2014's are 10,000 or one year, but 2013's and lower are 15,000 or one year. It is interesting how they tend to jump all over the map on what a proper number of miles should be for service from year to year. Porsche did the same thing and they did not give any included service with a new purchase.

Not that I, or you, believe in either one of them.
Wish my car had the updated schedule (built 2 months too soon). Would mean I would get every 3rd oil change done for free at the dealer instead of every 4th. Well, almost free, I still supply my own oil. |
