BMW Emissions Recall Campaign

Anyone get this letter?:

BMW Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to Reprogram DME for OBD Diagnostic ON N52 Engines

Campaign Number: 06E-A01

It goes on to say:

BMW has determined that certain 2006 model year 325i/iA/xi/xiA/xiTA, 330i/iA/xi/xiA, 525i/iA/xi/xiA and 530i/iA/xi/xiA/xiTA BMW automobiles, with six cylinder engines, may not fully meet the US EPA and California Air Resources Board emissions control requirements. BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign.

The problem is...
Your 2006 model year incoporates faulty DME controle module software that may not correctly detect a pontential emission relevant sensor failure. As a result, the vehicle's emissions may exceed the mandated limits without the normal warning ("Service Engine Soon") to the consumer.

The complete reprogramming may take up to approxmately one day. If you live in a State with SMOG Check Program, your vehicle must pass an emissions test, as required by state law. Without having this Recall performed, your vehicle may be more likely to fail this test.

And what does "Voluntary" mean?? Does it mean that I can bring the car in and the dealer must fix it? or does it mean that dealer can decide if they want to fix it now or wait to the next scheduled service even if I request that it be fixed?

Voluntary for you, not the dealer.

Will the reprogramming necessary bring the FULL system up to the latest version, or only the emmissions control component of the software?

Actually, in the US, "Voluntary" refers to the fact that BMW decided to make the recall without being forced to do so by the Government.
Almost all U.S. recalls fall in this category, as the maker wants to avoid a fight with the government.

The internal memo on the recall says its only for customers who want to bring it in

Do you think I need to have this done before I get my catback installed or does it matter?

Thanks

IMO it looks like it's voluntary. If u read it closely it says the system may not pick up the failure of a sensor which itself detects whether or not emissions are within spec.

The down side is that after a couple of years, you car MIGHT not pass emssions because a sensor isn't working. (O2 sensor?)

In general, emissions requirements cause a hinderance on engine performance. I wonder if you have one of these recalled engines, if you get an extra horsepower or two by the relaxed emissions sensing? hmmm....

Right. I also think it's the software that detects if a sensor has failed which is the problem. So in order for this to effect your emissions test /SMOG check, both your secondary (post-cat) O2 sensors AND your cat itself must be malfunctioning. So chances aren't that great that this will actually have an impact on your car's smog performance. But BMW has offered this voluntary recall to cover their bases.

Do you know what the criterion is for this? Is it geography based (i.e. northern vs southern climates) or is it simply vintage based?
