Synthetic Oil

I purchased 10w30 synthetic oil as my oil indicator was low. Can I use this or do I need 5w30? I did a search and I cant seem to locate the type.

BMW's Long Life-2001 (LL-01) approved oils are BMW 5w30 (really a group III blended synthetic); Mobil 1 0w40 (group IV full synthetic); Castrol 0w30 (group IV full synthetic, only found in autozone's) and Lubro Moly 5w30 (group III blended synthetic). If your just topping off a little bit I wouldn't worry but for the future stick with the recommended oils.

Im sure I can return the oil. The oil indicator said it was minimum and I had to choose between 5w and 10w and of course I chose the wrong one. I just dont want to do any harm to the engine.

In this time of the year the engine wouldn't know the difference between the 5w and 10w, especially just topping off a little. That number represents the cold flow characteristics of the oil, BMW recommends 0w/5w oils for the fact they flow better on a cold start which is also important the variable valve timing units. I would imagine you have the BMW 5w30 in the engine so if your willing to return the oil then you might as well stop by the dealer and mix the right oil in.

Which oil do you guys recommend?

I have 6500 miles and would like to do my first oil change.
What oil do you recommend that I get for the summer in NY, I drive my car hard every weekend and I will do another oil change in November before the cold winter starts?

What filter do I get?

I won't do the oil change myself but I want to give them the best stuff for my baby.

Thanks in advance guys

you can get a top up at the dealer for free in just a couple of minutes. Provided you live/work close to a dealer this is the easiest way.
