Stereo Question

Ok, so now that i've seen inside a few people's cars... There's one thing that differs for me and that's the head unit and dash display for the stereo.

Mine has the labelled "BMW Professional" with a higher screen layout and the full-button functionality - something which I have seen only very rarely since...

Is this a standard or optional? Otherwise i think i may have gotten a pretty good stereo without knowing

My dealer has surprised me a few times

Which area are you talking about? My head unit doesn't have anything written on it.

I'm pretty sure if it says "BMW Professional" with full-buttons, then it's gonna be more than stock

Wow that's VERY different from mine. That might be because I have iDrive, but all I've got is the volume/power knob, the CD slot and 8 favourite buttons. Nothing denoting "BMW business" or similar

What stereo option did you order? The upgraded option ain't cheap, pretty unlikely that you'd have gotten it for free...

It was on the dealership floor, ready to go.

I only had two options i wanted: sunroof and M sport, that was it, and the price pretty much reflected that

Who knows? Could have been a very nice surprise.

I'll take a full picture of it tonight to post, but it's identical to that one I linked. I've never seen another 1 series with that from what i've seen.

It depends, some territories also have a Business head unit. This is the base head unit that only has a single display line instead of two.

Here in NZ the Professional is the base head unit, i guesss its possibly the case in Oz too.

From what i understand my system (and the one linked) has two display lines?

It's wierd - i've just never seen it in another 1ers system and on Saturday meeting with John, Hugh and Joel - none of them had it either..

Here's a pic of mine (not a very clear one as I took it to show the storage bin that I replaced the ashtray with). Have you got Nav? Perhaps that's the difference...

Incorrect, mine has it too. The non-idrive version has a LCD screen. The business unit has 1 line, and the professional has 2 line lcd.

Ahhh i see now. Yeah, no Nav in my car (got a mobile gps and my blackberry which has nav).

So what's the diff between business & professional? I don't really see a very clear difference on the BMW website..

I looked at BMW's car configurator (because I just ordered my car without any of the hi-fi upgrades) and it looks like the base model head unit described as "AM/FM radio incl. in-dash CD player".

JMH 1983 is spot on. You may be comparing your car to ones' that have iDrive - like cozzas (which have no need for a traditional radio display as they use the iDrive display).

There isn't much of a difference between the Business and Professional radios though (other than the two line display and a couple of back office functions). Check out http://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6354 for more info

According to the BMW SBT Audio system the major non visable difference between business and professional is that the business has 4 x 40w outputs rather then 4 x 25w output that the professional has. It does mention this with regards to the navigation system, so this may not be the case in cars like ours without idrive or navigation.

All of the headunits come with 4 channels of audio however from the headunit. The hi-fi and premium hi-fi however come with an amplifier mounted in the rear passenger side of the boot and it gives 6 channels (or 7 with Logic 7).

In brief the system sucks, throw in an amp and a line converter and even with the stock speakers it'll make a big difference.

no 1's in Australia come with the Business head unit. Ignoring cars with Idrive, they all have the Professional, then different combinations of amps and speakers depending on which of the 3 stereo options they have (standard, HiFi, HiFi Professional)
If there are tweeters up near the mirrors it's not the standard stereo, If you have the effects menu in the head unit it's the HiFi Professional, if you have tweeters and no extra menu options, it's HiFi. Before any US 1'ers come in and tell me how wrong I am, the standard stereo in the US is the HiFi in Australia.....
