Not out of the question if the engine was overboosted (over 15 PSI for extended periods), but certainly not the norm by any means.

I'm the first the sing the sins of the N55/N54 and I've never heard of this happening with any sort of regularity.

Deflinitely not a regular occurrence, but I have seen it before. As well as bent rods on a more regular occasion with the N63 motor.. Fuel injectors stick open
Also seen a few N54's with the injector issues causing bottom-end troubles. And every one of these is an un-modified car....

This is not a common issue. There are many reasons that can cause the problem though. It could be that the rod bearing was defective or marred during assmebly. it could also mean that the rod shaft was over tightened to the crank. It could be a lubrication issue. The list goes on.
As for overboosting, well that is not a direct cause of the issue but constant overreving the engine because of turbo boost could. NOT a likely method though. There are many other things that can cause the problem too such as metal shavings, sand other debris in the crank case. etc. There is simply too many to list. There are ways to tell if it is a defect but you will need an expert to take a look at the bearings. And I suspect that if this is under warranty they wont release the items to you to have them inspected. Keep us posted.

Wow, this is the first time I've heard of a bearing issue on an n55 or n54. While I wouldn't call it common, bearing failure in the s65/m3 motor is well documented. Hope it all works out for you.

I would like to see if there were any oil reports leading up to failure.
Of course, this probably isn't the case...but it still probably would of helped avoid this. There is a reason why I do 4,000 miles intervals with the M with 10W-60...expensive but not as expensive as spinning a bearing. |

At this time the engine is in and they are waiting for other parts such as Turbo etc. It was recently serviced and everything was kosher. They did ask if we drove through water but that is all. I am sure we will never really know, but they were very confused. I was probably accelerating to 45-50 mph when it went into limp and then shut off and would not restart.

Wait you threw a rod bearing on an N5x? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that, outside of a hydrolock situation where the entire rod collapses. Did you over-rev the motor? Maybe an oil starvation issue? Honestly that’s very odd…just not an issue you see on these motors. What weight oil were you running?
