Finally a part of the family on my own... and some work to do now!

Hi folks,

I've just picked up my first car - an E82 135i! I've always remembered the Blue Water metallic E82 poster in my wardrobe when I was a kid and the excitement when my mom chose a Montego Blue E87 120i ten years ago.

Though it had some problems before purchase - and I found more on my way home. This is the summary of the pre-purchase inspection, and some issues need to be addressed ASAP.

HEADLIGHTS

Firstly, the right headlight is inop. The adaptive light control is always on the dash. The stealer did some repair and the auto headlight control seems to be working the next day in their lot. However, on that night, the right headlight is out again, and the low beam light failure warning popped up. I didn't see a high beam failure, but it seems that the high beam is out as well.

The right daytime running light seems to be working despite having an obd error.

BRAKES AND STEERING

On my first test drive, I found the brakes super soft, and have no confidence on the pedal. The ppi mechanic stated that the front and rear pads are pretty worned out, and the front rotor is out as well. The stealer seems to have replaced the pads, but I doubt they did any work on the front rotor, as they didn't give a list on what's been serviced. On the next day, I tried on some stop signs, and the feeling is firmer. However, on my way home, I found that when braking at higher speeds (>50mph) the steering wheel is vibrating.

Though I can't say that the brakes are the only thing to blame. On the night I picked up the car I ran over a crack carrying some speed and had a loud bang. On the next kinda-hard braking, the steering wheel veered to the left when the car is about to stop. It happed a few times when I slowed down for lights, but not a certainty. I then noticed that the car is veering slightly to the left when cruising hands-free on the freeway, and I don't think that it happened (or was really noticeable) on the first day of the test drive.

GASKETS AND LEAKS

Finally, just as every BMW in this age, the ppi mechanic stated that the oil pan gasket is leaking, and he showed me this under the floor.

He stated that the leaked liquid would be held by the floor, not dipping on the ground. I didn't find oil on the ground after some driving. The stealer, obviously, denies any leaks even with the picture.

Being new to all these kinds of stuff, I'd like to know what could be going wrong? I did some searches in the forum saying that it might be a faulty controller that failed the headlights, but I have no idea how to verify it. What are some good DIY works for a beginner to start working on?

Also, are there any recommendations for indy shops in the South Bay area (or maybe Fremont) for the jobs I can't do? Thanks!

I thought the footwelll module had an extended warranty/recall or something going on, haven't searched for it in a while though.

If you had to have it repaired you can get reimbursement

Damn, mine is MY 2011, is it still possible to get the coverage?

The carfax report stated that the car was offered on sale on 12/31/2010, and the first service at 01/31/2021. But the first DMV odometer reading was at 09/22/2011 with 45 miles, and the first owner was reported on 02/16/2012. So when will the warranty start counting?

Not sure. I'd print out the extended warranty bulletin and take it with you to the dealer & see what they say. Or get the work done and apply for reimbursement.

I think you can check your warranty status somewhere on the BMW website.

Went to the local stealership, did an "inspection" for $220, turned out that it's not the FRM module that caused the light inop. But the stealship asked for ANOTHER $631.88 to "determine" whether it's the assembly or the adaptive headlamp control module (or both) that had caused the problem...
