Looks like this is not a 100% bolt-on job. On the bright side there's no welding involved.

The pictures confirms my previous thoughts--that is, the stock exhaust setup does not have any slip joints after the 2nd set of cats and is just comprised of piping, welded to the cats.

From what I can tell from the install pictures, you are going to have to literally cut the stock exhaust pipes at some point after the 2nd cats and use the supplied clamps to hook up the new performance exhaust.

EDIT:

Dan, just in case I'm seeing things, can you confirm this?

Dan, if it's not too much to ask, could you also do a video footage comparison inside the car while someone is driving?

You're welcome guys! Anything I can do to help.

1. The Performance exhaust isn't offered in Black, the tips from the stock exhaust are 2 1/4 inches wide, and the actual exhaust without the black tips is about 2 inches wide. The Performance exhaust, which has built in tips, is 2 1/2 inches wide.

2. In order to cut the exhaust, we used BMW's installation instructions. Here is how we did it (pics to come later). The Performance exhaust comes with two pieces, the muffler and the piping that leads to the second resonator. On the 135i, there is a cat converter right near the headers, leading to a set of resonators, and then leading to another set of resonators, and then to the muffler. You measure where you need to add the Performance piping, making sure that the clamps won't touch the first set of resonators. Then, you cut off where you marked, deleting the resonators closest to your muffler (seen almost in the middle of the under body of the car). Once cut, remove the muffler from the hangers, there are 3 spots (one on the left of the tips, one on the right, and one about a foot down on the piping). Once your muffler is off, you can install the performance piping, using 2 provided clamps. Once the piping is installed, you install the performance muffler. Put the muffler into the stock hangers, again 3 spots. Provided in the kit is also a connection piece, which goes in between the piping and the muffler area. Screw the nut and bolt back into place, and your exhaust install is complete.

I highly recommend your BMW dealership or a shop do this install to make sure it's not messed up. You can put the stock pieces back on, provided you use the clamps given with the kit. Once again, you are deleting a set of resonators, and the stock muffler with 2 1/4 black tips which will not fit over the 2 1/2 stainless performance tips

I will be taking video today for the following:

Stock vs performance exhaust, side by side comparison

Fly-By stock vs performance exhaust, one side by side, one individual

Cabin ride noise. We will be hitting about 80-85 mph on the freeway to test out the sound heard from inside the cabin.

As for warranty, I'll make it short and simple. If you want the extended version, view my signature. Before delivery installation, 4yr/50k miles. After delivery installation, 2yr/unlimited miles. To carry this warranty, must be installed by a bmw dealership

I'll let you guys know!!!

OUCH .. I can't believe this isn't 100% bolt on .... .. now this makes more sense since BMW will charge more to install as it will take time to do step #2 ...

Also .. would people actually trust a dealer to do step #2?

Dan, in light of this information, can people back out of the pre-order?

thanks,
Crowley

Forgive my morning pre-coffee mind please, but I want to confirm something.

This is a cat-back system then? Important for autox stock classing issues.

Sounds like it is, but when things are mentioned like removing resonators and cutting it makes me want to verify the situation.

Edit- Forgot to ask for weight differences in the two systems, thanks.

Of course, I'm not going to sell something that you don't want  BMW didn't make the original exhaust with clamps, so no exhaust can just bolt on unfortunately.

I would absolutely trust a dealership to install this piece. Not only is the dealership liable for their work, but BMW is required to back any install made by a authorized dealership. This means that if any mistake is made, where you may here any noise or irritating sound caused by a poor install, will be covered when you tell you service advisor of the situation.

It's a cat-back, and I can probably check the weight when I get into work here in about 1 hour

:w00t: Shame BMW didn't make the exhausts all bolt on, or any if in that case. When I put my Dinan exhaust on my E46, I had to get the muffler cut off and muffler bolted on. I still have my stock exhaust just incase
