Price on new CA key...

Hi all, I seem to have misplaced my main key to the 1'er (CA version) and am not looking forward to the cost of a replacement.

Anyone got any idea of the $$'s I'm going to get screwed for?

As an aside, I used the spare yesterday and was amazed at the amount of personalisation that's associated to the individual keys. All my favourites, mirror settings, door lock settings, light settings etc. You don't think about it until you have to change.

I've hear rumours around $150. I've picked up the wife's key fob by mistake in the past and I might as well be driving someone else's car!

Here's a scenario...I'm pushing buttons like crazy on the fob and nothing is happening....only to realise later that it's for the wrong car!

Damn, thanks amk2912, I'll have to call them on Monday unless it turns up - doesn't "yours" have stylish M on it or something?

izzodesh, you guys seem to have warranty for all types of things we don't. Never heard of 'key warranty' downunder...

I have little BMW metal key tags which say "Valued Client of <your BMW dealership name and address>"

The finder just pops them in a mail box and they find their way back to your dealership.

Of course you're relying on the finder's goodwill, but it a better-than-nothing scenario.

That's a good idea. Should add the words "Reward offered" so there is some incentive for the finder.

Yeah - I suppose a $100 reward would be enough incentive for the finder to return the keys in person to the dealership. All the dealer does is put the fob in the reader to find out the owner.

$100 reward beats the hell out of $650+$150 for a new one!

Geez. I think I'll just live with the one spare then and guard it with my life. Far canal (to borrow an expression from earlier), that's highway robbery.

I remember the days when I lived in the UK, a replacement key for an e36 was just 25GBP - approx $62 back in those days. Yeah, $650 sounds about right. For some bizzare reason I have 3 keys for my E70 X5. $150 seems a bit steep for ''programming''. The third key I got did not work until it was initialised by putting it into the slot - that was about the only ''programming'' it needed.

If there are any changes to be made it is done usually twice a year. I'm not 100% sure but I think it is usually March and September. I haven't heard about any changes for this year but 2010 (March?) may be a possiblity. I spend quite a lot of my time now on 1addicts and some on ''www.xoutpost.com''. The rollout for the E70 seems so slow, all the other models seem to be getting the new idrive so much sooner. I heard that the X5M WILL be coming to Australia in Jan 2010 so it makes sense to be rolling out the new idrive around that time too. 408kw.... , I am so tempted!

Apologies to the OP for going off topic too.

Nope lost one ages ago.

Funny thing is it turned up last week when the washing machine broke down, it was stuck in the outlet pump. So it actually cost an extra $150 which was the cost of having the machine fixed
