Battery

I have had them die in 3 years even though I work from home. Car is garaged, but the heat in Florida will kill the battery. At least ours are in the trunk. I noticed that those in the engine compartment tend to die sooner.

Yes, extreme heat or cold will kill a battery's life span. Or one or two good full discharges.

Is there any way to take a peep and look at this cable to see if it's corroded?? Just curious, I hate to take my car in for service and be without it for a few days. I really love that thing.

BMW said the problem stems from a tin-coated connector that links the positive battery cable and the fuse box in each of the models. The coating can degrade over time until it disrupts the flow of power and stalls the engine.

Tin?

BMW says it learned of the defect in July 2010 after receiving a pair of case studies on repairs performed in the United States.

The automaker later received three complaints from Canadian regulators of incidents where the defect caused vehicles to lose power. One of the incidents led to a minor crash but no injuries.

BMW says it has already started using a silver coating instead of tin in new vehicles. The company says that when dealers repair the recalled vehicles, they will also use a different installation technique that will make the connector better at handling vibrations.

In a statement, BMW said once it "distributes the necessary replacement parts to authorized BMW centers, customers with affected vehicles will receive a letter via First Class Mail asking them to schedule a service appointment."

I'm still trying to figure out if BMW even knows my damn address.

Tin?
A lot of connectors are typically tin-plated copper alloy... Better ones are nickel, silver, or gold-plated.

This recall doesn't start up in the states until the end of March. I think we are gonna have to wait until April or so(for us over here in DE).

Perhaps this is a strange coincidence but my 2010 128i, which worked perfectly on Friday 3/1, wouldn't start this morning 3/4. The key fob didn't work so I used the actual key to get in the car. After a failed attempt to start the car I heard a strange sound coming from the glove box and then the hazard button started flickering. I called up BMW Fairfax and having the car towed in to get looked at. No word yet from BMW USA regarding my car and the recall. So I'm hoping they take appropriate action as to avoid another trip to the service center.

***Turns out that with my car being parked for two days + cold temps= increased battery drainage. I just finished driving around for 20 minutes to get the charge back up to par. I'll see what fortune the morning brings.

Here's what you need to do....put on your diplomacy hat and contact BMWNA (if you are in the USA) or go to your local dealer and speak directly to the Service Manager and ask him to put you in touch with the factory Rep for your district. Explain the issue to BMWNA (not the dealer) and give them a copy of the receipt and ask them what they can do for you. You may get a partial refund, or they may be willing to offer you a BMW Accessory in lieu of cash, or even an extended warranty. They will probably give you something, but I'd not expect a check for the full amount. I'm on my 8th BMW car and 2nd BMW motorcycle and find that if you go about in a businesslike manner with them they will almost always do something. Good luck.

I never got a mail so I just called the dealership and they confirmed the recall and I scheduled an appointment. They said it would take "half a day"

Question for anyone who has had it done: 2 local dealerships told me that the recall involves replacing a wire that runs under the passenger's seat(cut off and replace that section). But the recall letter I just received by mail explicitly says: Positive Battery Terminal Cable. If so, is there an improved cable? My case is unique as I am upgrading to 1M battery cables and from what I have read, those vehicles too are affected. I just purchased a set of 1M cables but the part numbers for the Positive cable were never changed on Real OEM. Anybody know exactly what the work that entails fixing this cable is?

The repair procedure involves removing the glove box, lowering the front fuse panel and inspecting the B+ terminal connection for damage/overheating. If no damage is found a section of the positive battery cable is replaced with updated terminal/connector. If damage is found the front fuse panel will need to be replaced as well.

What battery cables did you purchase? The ones to the starter/alternator (that go under the car) or front fuse panel (that go under the pass side carpet)?

I wouldn't mind at all if it took half a day. I can get a loaner, and do my annual spring tennis gear shopping at my wholesaler, who is an hour from the dealer. Then, I can talk to my salesperson, and see what kind of deal he can do for me on a new 128. I'll do the 120-mile drive home on the back roads, and keep my shotgun-riding buddy's attention.

I love road trips, almost as much as retirement : )

Of course, it is nice to have a good relationship with the dealer.

Nevermind, definitely a different wire.
