135i purchase advice

Hi looking at a car at a bmw dealer 2008 one owner fsh with 140kms. I have been offered a 5 year extended factory warranty for around $600 per year. Wise investment or a waste? I will add around 5000kms per year and will service fully so my positive side suggests what will or could go wrong which will require $3000 to spend given with the age and Kim's already done issues would have been and gone. Or do I invest the $3k instead in buying a potentially better?? Lower k car. My second thought is not buy the warranty. Thanks

I can only comment based on what I've read. Like you I've been looking for a nice 135i for a while now (and debating the high vs low km car pros/cons).

Cars over 100 000km tend to need the $3k to keep them reliable. If I was buying a car with those km's at minimum I would walnut blast the engine, replace the water pump, thermostat and high pressure fuel pump. I would also check for leaky injectors and the condition of the turbos as wastegate rattle could be a problem. Turbo replacement can run up to $5k.

Paying an extra $5k for a 60 000km car could mean most of the above would not require replacement for a while (although I hear the walnut blast is beneficial for all cars over 50 000km). Hope that helps...

Thanks. Are suggesting don't get the warranty and put the $3k aside for the things you mention? I guess only the turbo would be covered by a warranty anyway? Are they fragile or is the downside of a high performance car in terms of required upkeep

I think he's saying you'd be better of putting that money towards buying a 135i with less km's for the extra $3-5k

You didn't mention how much the dealer is trying to charge for an 08 with 140k kms (not 140kms).

Chances are it's a lot and you're likely to find a lower km car for a similar price privately.

I have been looking around a fair bit as well and i can safely say that you will be able to find a car privately with much lower ks than 140 for a comparable or lower price.

Just to add I live in Adelaide and not one manual on the market under $60k for the last 4 months and the cheapest 135i is around $35k with over 100km on it so the market here is impossible

Under $30k is realistic but I would still stretch another 3-4k and get one with under 80k.
